A young mother with an out-of-wedlock child dares to face her accusers without shame. The Scarlet Letter is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1850 novel of Hester Prynne, who has been branded as an adulteress in a small Puritan village of New England. Sentenced to wear a scarlet A as her badge of shame, Hester must endure the prejudice rampant in a 17th Century village of strict, mean-spirited townspeople. Defiantly refusing to disclose the identity of the father, in this excerpt Hester is led to the town square for public shaming.
