Description

The God of Small Things presents India’s complex social and historical identity in a narrative about a family and a community. Rahel and Estha, twin sister and brother, live in a small town in southern India with their mother, Ammu, their uncle, Chacko, and their grandmother, Mammachi. Chacko, educated at Oxford, is a “self-proclaimed Marxist” and the inept manager of the family’s pickle factory. In this excerpt, Chacko uses the example of his father, to teach the twins about India’s colonial heritage.

This app provides a robust multimedia lesson centered on The God of Small Things (Arundhati Roy, 1997). Using this app, students can read an excerpt from the novel, view a video lesson modeling a student discussion of the text, and write a thoughtful response based on a writing prompt. Teachers may also allow students to participate in a peer review of their writing, with an accompanying rubric.
