Seeking innovative middle and high school teachers of all disciplines who want to explore an amazing Alternate Reality Game in and outside of the classroom. The concept is that there is a storyline in the game that students become a part of and they are given challenges (both from The Rez--the Resistance, which is the name of the group leading the charge to rescue all of human history--as well as from the local leaders who are teachers such as yourself.)

The name of the game is Skabe din Fremtid, which means "Create Your Future" in Danish and seeks to engage students with the following storyline. Machines have begun to take over and have gradually begun to re-write all of recorded human history, replacing human impact with the impact of machines.

The idea is that the students, or Humarchivists, as they are called in the game are supposed to research and engage in challenges that will help them re-create and re-archive human history (this would work equally well for encouraging students to "re-create" scientific experiments.

I have done a great deal of work on this building the infrastructure on social media and plan on incorporating local newspapers, radio and television stations as well as the web.

There is an Edmodo group that I hope you will join to help best plan and implement this novel way of learning. The group is called "Alternative Reality Games in Education" https://edmodo.com/public/alternative-reality... and the group code is: mrs54u

    Hope to see you there.

    Sincerely,

    Brian Mannix

We just finish the ISTE Games & Sims online book club!

If you are a current ISTE member, please do join the Games & Simulations Network to discuss this more and get updates.

We had 87 people registering to participate in the Google + Community! The book club included two tracks, so network members could choose one or both! The first track was game studies with Sherry Jones, a games scholar who uses games to teach rhetoric. The second track run by the Games and Simulations Network officers was the Young Adult book, For The Win, by Cory Doctorow. This book is about three young gamers who become involved in a labor movement for online workers. We held two online discussion over Google Hangout per week. One for each track. We have over seventeen hours of indexed videos.

If you’d like to take a look at what we did here’s the links:

We are in the process of receiving feedback from participants on topics and books for the Fall book club.
We did enjoy it so much that we are planning to do three more in Fall 14, Spring 15 and Summer 15. We’d like your input. So, please click here for the discussion on the ISTE site or share your thoughts here in Edmodo.

Summer Online Book Club for educators wanting to discuss more about games, game studies and game based learning. METAGAME Book Club July 15 - August 16, 2014 (apologies for cross-posting.)

ISTE's Virtual Environments Network and the Games & Simulations Network will be doing a summer book club. It involves reading publications, a really great book, going to websites, watching videos and even going in game if you are interested.

This book club has 2 tracks. There are Game Studies (great for English and humanities teachers) academic readings with Sherry Jones, the creator of the Rhetoric and Games or rgMOOC.

The second track will be facilitated by the educator’s gaming guild, Inevitable Betrayal. The book for the second track, is the young adult book, For the Win by Cory Doctorow (great for economics, social studies and anyone looking to engage their students in reading). It is also gives an insider look into massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMOs and MMORPGs).

For The Win is available on Kindle, in print or you can download the free version at http://craphound.com/ftw/download/
