I am applying for my school to be a certified school. I am very excited about our second year of digital citizenship curriculum implementation. We know our children are all digital citizens, but we want them to be good digital citizens. Through the use of the e-rate toolkit and Digital Passport, our students gave a strong foundation and the skills needed to be model safe online behaviors. We hope our efforts will be recognized, so we can spread awareness in the community and with parents.

I have recently taught a full unit incorporating 5 digital citizenship lessons to my 6th graders. I believe this is so important in this day and age in which students rely on technology on a daily basis. They must understand how to communicate their ideas safely and effectively online. The students were able to relate to the lessons and were eager to share their knowledge.
    • Almoutaa小姐 - Hi Mrs. Wallace, Are you open to share your lessons?

Twitter can act as a great filter for parents and educators, and provide some transparency when it comes to what’s going on inside the classroom. However, the border between personal and professional is increasingly fuzzy. Are you using twitter to communicate with parents or students?
    • Wooten女士 - Great article! One of the principals at the campus I serve was just asking me to help her with Twitter next year. :) Thanks for sharing!

In 2013 Kamehameha Elementary School became a 1:1 laptop environment where each student in grades 4-6 now has access to a MacBook Air. Before being allowed to take the device home students needed to complete the Common Sense Media lesson scoring an average of 90%. The Common Sense Media lessons were very pertinent for my students and helped to build not only their confidence but also that of their teachers and parents.

I just finished my final lesson from the E-rate toolkit today. I've now done the 3 lessons in benchmark grades 2 and 5. I really enjoyed the final 5th grade lesson today "Digital Citizenship", it was a great way to wrap up the year and send our students on to middle school.

I really enjoy using this lessons with the students. The 2nd graders love the lesson "Going Places Safely". I chose to do the benchmark grade program at my school, so I teach 3 lessons to 2nd and 5th grade.

      • Sullivan小姐 - What a great way to end the year! What about next year? You could always introduce digital citizenship with Digital Passport (www.digitalpassport.org) and earn your Common Sense Certified Educator badge early in the year!

      • Mitchell女士 - Yes, I will do this again next year! This is my 2nd year implementing the toolkit. I just submitted my renewal application for Common Sense Educator. I do need to submit earlier, because I introduce Digital Passport early in the year. I'm looking to work on becoming a Common Sense Certified School, that is my next step.

    • Almoutaa小姐 - I need to design my own curriculum for computer technology. Any resources, please? I am using the NETS standards.

    • Sullivan小姐 - And please let me know if you have any questions about the curriculum or Common Sense resources (lsullivan@commonsense.org)! I know other members of the community can speak to it as well.

      • Anna Lee Lum - This year, teachers at my school were encouraged to teach a minimum of one Digital Citizenship lesson in hopes that we could learn alongside our students and understand what Digital Citizenship is. Although I integrated technology within my curriculum units/projects and was comfortable using multiple apps, I knew I was less educated about what not to share and take from websites. Teaching multiple lessons increased my awareness on so many levels! I assumed students knew email and social media etiquette but was totally incorrect. • Baird女士 - Our school has been teaching Digital Citizenship since we first implemented a one-to-one iPad program in 2011. We keenly understood that although our students know how to navigate electronic devices much better than any of us (as adults) that they would need guidance in how to safely and respectfully navigate the vast digital world! Having previously used a compilation of sources, we love using the one-stop Digital Literacy and Citizenship iBook series. The variety of topics included and the extras in the Library really have allowed us to tailor our program and connect the 显示更多...

      • Sharma小姐 - I have been using the Digital Compass App with my students and have just read about the Common Sense Certified Educator and am keen to give this a go; developing digital citizenship is a priority as we are a 1:1 school; I look forward to exploring your resources further with my students and hope to put in an application.

      • Sullivan小姐 - That's great Ms. Sharma! How are your students liking Digital Compass? Please let me know if you have any questions regarding certification. Leading your students through the game will help in reaching certification criteria.

I assumed they knew what information was deemed personal vs private and was wrong again. I assumed they knew how to efficiently navigate websites and research topics which they partially did well, but the lessons on Common Sense Media further made clear how much more effective they can be by using the precise keywords.
Next year, I intend to implement the lessons earlier in the school year. In addition, this summer I will be sharing the Common Sense Media website with other educators so they can implement these lessons within their own classrooms.
