    Is there any of your games that are free? I have a student who currently is done with all of the apps I have found, and he likes "map" games.

      Hi Mr. Hassan, 3rd World Farmer exists in a free version online (www.3rdworldfarmer.com) but it contains ads and is blocked by default from most school networks, so it may not be possible to access it. For free games, I recommend FreeCiv which is a great way to learn about history through play: https://play.freeciv.org/webclient/#

    Urban farming is a growing trend in many cities. Take a look at this map, or add your own garden if you have one. http://www.urbanfarming.org/garden-locations....

    Interestingly, urban farming is also a huge trend in many developing countries. People migrating to the cities are not always able to find jobs there, so urban farming has become a major source of income and food in many places. Article about that here: http://asq.africa.ufl.edu/obosu-mensah_fall02...

    We just wanted to share this interesting article. There has long been a trend of urbanization in developing countries such a Ghana. Apparently, many of the migrants unable to find other jobs in the cities become urban farmers. Might be an interesting setting for an updated game. http://asq.africa.ufl.edu/obosu-mensah_fall02...

    I see the price is $150 for a group. How is group defined? Would it be all my students, whom I've divided into classes (groups)?

      Hi Mr. Hansen.

      Our main http://www.3rdworldfarmer.com website is monetized by ads on the pages. The edmodo app is free of ads, and monetized by the license fee instead, since the ads can be a problem in a school setting. We do need to monetize the game in these ways to cover hosting, development and maintenance cost, and you're welcome to use either option. We are hardly punishing you in any way, since it is out of our control whether you decide to install a web filter

      I'm with 3rd world farmer on this one. Sorry Mr Hansen. Whitelisting is a pretty straight-forard option.

      Same here, I made a lesson plan which involved the site and sent it into my district office. They loved it and the site was unblocked within hours. Message me if you want the activity. If you want the badges at the bottom of the acitivity, you can find them in my shared badges. Good luck.

    Is there a benefit to using the app here on Edmodo that the website doesn't allow me as a teacher to do?

      Yes, the Edmodo app has 3 benefits.

      * It's ad-free.
      * It doesn't need to be unblocked by school firewalls, which has been an issue with the website.
      * It has social features. These are currently limited to a few badges that players are awarded when they complete the game, but we do have plans to extend the social features.

      I hope this answers your question. If you have suggestions for new features or ways we could improve the game, feel free to share them here.

      That's actually exactly what I was hoping to hear. Right now I'm trying to get the site unblocked for the district, but it's nice to know there is a fallback if that doesn't work.

    The Dust Bowl is a period in US History that can really add some perspectives to 3rd World Farmer. We just wanted to share this great pbs documentary about it, including their interactive content on the linked website. As always, feel free to share this and other resources, as well as your own teaching experiences. http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/dustbowl/interact...

    Here's an interesting article about how China is handlings some of the problems also discussed in 3rd World Farmer. Nobody can object to an improved infrastructure with easier access to education and clinics, or the attempts to develop the economy for the rural population, but the idea of anybody forcing 250 million people to sell their land and move into newly constructed and totally planned communities is still just a little bt scary...
