Phillip Callaway's Connections

Sobre Dr. Phillip Callaway

I enjoy teaching. Each day I hope for a surprise in class. It might be a nugget of wisdom shared by a student. I just wait for an aha moment. My first teaching job was around 1979-80 in grad school at Emory University, where I got to teach ancient Hebrew and some religion classes. In Germany, I served as assistant to a professor who introduced me to the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Back in the USA, I taught German for adults at college near Atlanta starting in 1985. I got my certification to teach German about 1991 and have taught German ever since. There was an interlude in 2003-2006 when I moved to Chile to learn Spanish. I also taught English for a couple of schools in and around Santiago. In 2006 I came to Haynes Bridge Middle School to teach German and later added Spanish. Occasionally I write on the side. My wife, Azusa, and I travel a lot. Just to remind me of what it's like to learn a language from scratch, I take Japanese lessons in the summers in Japan. Besides all this stuff, I love music of all kinds: classics to jazz. A singer I respect is Andrea Boccelli. I love the comedy of people from Jack Benny to more recent folks. As a child I loved Red Skelton. My favorite book might be Perfume written by a German named Patrick Suesskind a couple of decades back. My favorite movie - impossible! After a hiatus of 20 years, in the last few years I have seen so many movies. My favorite sport used to be track and field, when I still ran and jumped. Every four years I am devoted to World Cup soccer. My favorite painter fluxuates: Albrecht Duerer, Pablo Picasso, and even Salvador Dali make me smile. As for my favorite food, when I'm in Japan I love almost everything. A chain restaurant called Osho serves great Chinese food Japanese style (try to gyoza, haposa, champon!). I also love shioyaki fish and udon. Where do I stop? In America, I can't get enough of the vegetables. Favorite TV show is definitely The Middle. I don't like to be late to work or for appointments. If you want to know more, get the book!
