About Mr. Daniel Kurland

Education Mr. Kurland graduated from Marymount University’s Professional Development School (PDS) in May 2012 with a M.Ed. degree in Special Education, General Education Curriculum. He earned his Virginia teaching license from Old Dominion University’s Career Switcher Program in 2008. In 1985, he earned his Bachelor's of Arts (BA) from Georgetown University (English Major, History Minor). Prior Work Experience Mr. Kurland worked for over 20 years in the wood products industry. He has experience in logistics, millwork, sales, purchasing, and finance, and managment. He served as a Member of the Board of Directors as an At-Large Represented elected by his fellow employee-owners, and served as an Operations Manager, responsible for a 100,000 sq. ft. warehouse in Alexandria. Family The importance of education has always been stressed upon Mr. Kurland, whose pursuit of a teaching career was heavily influenced by his father’s experiences as a young civil rights lawyer during the "One-man, One-vote" movement in Mississippi, and his mother’s experiences in Japanese-American Internment Camps during World War II, where she taught herself how to read. Mr. Kurland is married, has a son in high school, and a miniature schnauzer. His role as a parent is another key factor in his pursuit of a teaching career. Mission My mission is to inspire students to want to learn, to model for students the disciplines and habits of learning, and to engage students in learning experiences linked to prior experiences, that promote reflection, generalization, and problem solving ability.
