When I was student teaching in a junior high, the entire school had word parts that each subject would learn that related to their subject and it was awesome! I tried to get a hold of that school and they don't have those lists anymore. Does anyone here use something similar to that in their schools? I teach high school, but our students are extremely low in vocabulary, and I really think using word parts across the curriculum would help them.- 40 minutes ago

I just found this community as a part of a professional development our school is doing on Edmodo. I wonder if someone who uses this site with middle schoolers (specifically 7th graders) can tell me how they use it -- how do you keep track of student answers, how do you use vocab lists, etc. I am specifically interested in Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes. The Latin root MATER-MATR celebrates "Mom" in vocabulary puzzles. Mothers deserve special treatment everyday, and the descriptive adjectives are a bonus.

I just got the app for the latin root words but I can't seem to get it on my Language arts page, how do I do that? I went to manage settings and it is clicked for all the other groups, but I can't get it to get on the Language Arts page.

Does anyone have a good resource for important words students need to know based on their reoccurance in nonfiction/academic texts. This is for an 8th grade class. Right after spring break I am going to introduce our 7th grade ecology unit. Our ecology unit is really heavy with vocabulary. Does anyone have an interesting/engaging way to introduce the unit and/or teach all of the vocabulary (about 30 new terms)?- Mar 21, 2013

Mrs. Lynch - I recommend http://www.studyblue.com. It is geared more towards high school and college, but I used it with my 7th graders and many really like it. You only have to have one student input the deck and all can access it. They can also make their own cards for practice. May not be that exciting, but the kids can take practice quizzes and see how they are progressing.
