Looking for exemplary STEM-focused, project-based elementary schools as models. Suggestions, group? Thank you.

I'd like to integrate more STEM ideas into the elementary classroom. Does anyone know of any resources or online PD that would help?

I am writing a new Course Outline for our school board for our upcoming Algebra 2 STEM class that will be taught along side a combined conceptual physics and principles of engineering course this coming fall. Anyone have suggestions on Key Assignments? (not the projects that the physics/engineering class will be doing, but the key assignments I would be doing to facilitate comprehension of the CCSS in Algebra 2)

We are looking to tie Novels and Books to STEM subjects in all grade areas. If you know of a novel or book that you can recommend, please fil out this quick survey form. When we have our results, we will share them with the entire group.

Next year my STEM class will be exploring the big idea, "Is there anyone out there?" exploring life in other worlds...centered around astronomy for the first qtr. Any ideas for some project based activities for gr 7-8?

Hello! Our high school will be implementing a STEM academy soon. What does yours look like? Unique, new classes? Or more of a track of STEMish classes that are already there?
    • Mrs. Carter - I have consistently thought about what I teach in English and tried to map it with Science. I also flipped my classroom to fit everything in and add additional tech components. My LA class also piloted iPads so a lot of BiG changes all centered around STEM. We have an Engineering elective, oceanography elective, a garden elective, coding and game building, photography manipulation, video production, 3-D design, and a bunch more science oriented designed for next year. We also will be undergoing a digital conversion, we are school wide STEM though not just a smaller school within more...

      • Mr. Hitsman - Thanks for the response! I think common core will be a good transition here. Anyone else? Preferably from a public, non-STEM school?

      • Mrs. Carter - I am in a public school... By the way...

      • Ms. Laabs - I am in public high school, and we too will be implementing a STEM academy next year. I am coordinating the math with the science and engineering teacher. I am excited, but am also a bit overwhelmed. For the math, I will be doing modified flipping, and trying to match as much as possible my math sequence with the physics class. Both the physics and engineering are unique new classes just for the STEM students (incoming 9th graders). The math class (algebra 2) is also a unique STEM algebra 2. While we will have the same common core standards as traditional algebra 2 - more...

      • Mr. Hitsman - Very cool...we are adding an engineering class as well, but it is inclusive of all grade levels. It will be a PBL class. As of now, our planned (for 2014-2015) academy is a track of currently offered courses, with maybe a capstone project. So far there is no plan of matching concepts across the curriculum although we discussed it. I am interested to hear more about how your STEM academy will play out. Lets keep this conversation going!

    • Mr. Hitsman - Mrs. Carter, I should have been more clear. I meant I would like to hear from others who have a standard school-wide curriculum with a STEM academy or similar.

I am looking for information/resources/links on creating and implementing STEM carts in the 4th/5th grade classroom. Does anyone have any experience?

I am looking for an app for the iPad similar to mental note. I need it to allow the students to take pictures, write/type notes, and voice memos. I would like my classes to create a virtual lab notebook that can be uploaded to dropbox and emailed for at home accessibility. Any thoughts?
    • Mr. Carey - Evernote does most of those things.

      • Mr. Monasterio - You do have to pay for it, but Notability is great one I use for myself. I have to try it with students. It imports and exports directly to Dropbox, Box, and I think the latest update allows it to import/export from Google Drive.

I am looking for a sixth grade level math project to wrap up my school year. Collaboration is a plus, but it doesn't need to be tech based. Any thoughts?

I am looking for any STEM Education ideas or activities that have direct ties to the field of Geometry (specifically properties of triangles and/or circles). Thank you!
