What teacher had faith in your potential?
"My sixth grade teacher, Linda Holmes, built my confidence in a way that still impacts me to this day. In the years leading up to six grade I had a series of mediocre teachers who didn’t challenge me and I struggled to find my place in school. Linda was the opposite – an ambitious teacher with a reputation for challenging students to their breaking point. While many of my classmates struggled under her pressure, I thrived and built a sense of confidence that carried me through college."

Executive Director Merrill Vargo's latest article appears in EdSource and follows up on UC Berkeley public policy professor David Kirp's recent Op-Ed that appeared in The New York Times, in which he said, “To succeed, students must become thinkers, not just test-takers.” Merrill writes about how creating schools where students are thinkers will require that "we transform not only teaching but school, district, and even state and federal leadership as well."
"The leaders of the schools and districts serving these kids need to be encouraged to let go of control…and take the leap to start to create school systems in which all participants, both students and adults, are thinkers."Executive Director Merrill Vargo's latest article appears in EdSource and follows up on UC Berkeley public policy professor David Kirp's recent Op-Ed that appeared in The New York Times, in which he said, “To succeed, students must become thinkers, not just test-takers.” Merrill writes about how creating schools where students are thinkers will require that "we transform not only teaching but school, district, and even state and federal leadership as well."Show Full Post Show Less

There are several key elements of data-driven reform efforts afoot in the U.S. We think to determine the extent to which deep pedagogical improvements can occur, is still an open question.
Most of these key elements found in this document require school leaders to reframe data use from the macro-level (using data for accountability) to the micro-level (using data
for improving classroom instruction).
The shift in purpose from accountability to pedagogical improvement is most likely to occur through providing data that teachers can easily integrate into the ‘rhythm’ of their existing curricular and teaching patterns. There are several key elements of data-driven reform efforts afoot in the U.S. We think to determine the extent to which deep pedagogical improvements can occur, is still an open question.Show Full Post Show Less

CALLING ALL BEGINNING TEACHERS!!!!!!!!
I created this group called Beginning Teachers. It is aimed as a platform for beginning teachers to help each other out, chat to each other and swap resources.
Please feel free to invite other beginning teachers (approximately 0-5 years experience.) We currently have members of the group with 6 and 7 years experience, so we are not very strict on experience! Also if you have twitter/other social networks, feel free to pass on the message. The more, the merrier!!
I thought it would be a good platform to help each other out. The Join URL is:
