Oh dear lord I am not liking the use of the outdated typical study guides. With all this technology can't we do something better to review? Seriously, sitting there listening to the copier make page after page.....packet after packet. I'm not a paper passer-outer but can't think of a better way...someone....anyone help me. I teach 6th grade ancient civ and 7th grade civics. We have used quizlet, zondle, edmodo, videos.- May 15, 2013

Mrs. Karabinas - I agree- Change up the assessments! Create a rubric with the class with the main learning goals BEFORE the unit starts, then they will know what content/vocabulary to really focus on during the lessons. Finally, they can do self-chosen project (or selected from a menu you create) that is scored according to the rubric. Wa-la!

Does anyone have any lesson or unit plans for teaching about state government in the elementary school? I'm sure could adapt a different state to fit our state, I just want to make this as exciting as possible for the kids!- Mar 29, 2013

Mr. Shanteau - Study guides have been ineffective with my group this year. I've tried using content from the unit and play jeopardy with white boards. All teams that get the question right get the points. It is fun but my kids that struggle still need additional support.
You could also change up your assessments. Do research projects that demonstrate the learning. I teach fifth grade US history and my kids are making wanted posters for a loyalist or a patriot. They also need to write a persuasive letter with reasons why the loyalist or patriot should be arrested.
