I need book suggestions for my 8th grade Pre-AP/GT classes. Next year, rather than assigning the same book for each student, I plan to have a variety of books centered around a theme from which my students can choose, thereby hopefully gaining more buy-in than in years passed.
I am looking for high interest novels for the following: Revolutionary War time period (I have "Johnny Tremain" and "My Brother Sam is Dead"), Civil Wartime period (I have "Across Five Aprils"), Fantasy, non-fiction, and theatre (I have "The Diary of Anne Frank").
I have considered assigning "The Chronicles of Narnia" and reading all the books throughout the school year, but I'm not sure how much buy-in I would get from this. I want to teach annotation, close reading, and theme using novels, but if they won't read them, I cannot make this happen.
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated!!I need book suggestions for my 8th grade Pre-AP/GT classes. I would love to find information on how to specifically teach the ACADEMIC VOCABULARY OF TESTING at the elementary level. I have found some resources, specifically for math and our Social Studies Department has also sent out a list of "testing terms." I would like to learn more about strategies to teach these words that can be really hard for ESOL students. Any suggestions?- May 3, 2013
