Hi Mathalicious/Edmodo community! We are looking to chat with you rock stars who both use Mathalicious lessons with your classes, and interact with your students through Edmodo (not necessarily at the same time). If this describes you, please shoot me an email: kate@mathalicious.com.

I have just started using Mathalicious and have found a few of the lesson real fun (and I think some of my students have, too). I haven't had a lot of time to look through all the lessons and the keyword search for "quadratics" has only turned up the lesson "Sold!" I was wondering if there was any other lesson that even remotely uses it.

    Thanks in advance!
    • Mathalicious - Hi Mrs. Reilly! Also check out Le Pon de Javert, which is a great way to contextualize a quadratic relationship.

Did you know a personal pan pizza is 56% crust?! Observe Pi Day with pie! Also, down with crust!
    • Coach Haack - observing pi day with a pie is not cute nor effective ...

    • Mathalicious - This lesson involves investigating the circumference and area of a pizza ... we want to have a little fun and encourage students to become critical consumers (and to start seeing the world through a mathematical eye). We believe this is a very effective way to teach and reinforce mathematical concepts. Shall we agree to disagree? ;)

Does anyone have any good kindergarten math activities to share?
    • Dr. Calvillo - Have student make sets of ten things times ten, (100), my daughter made origami animals, ten types times ten = 100...

      • Mar 3, 2013
    • Mathalicious - Hi Mrs. Pennington! Mathalicious activities are mostly for middle and high school classes, but you'll be the first to know if we branch into early childhood!

    • Mrs. Pennington - Thanks for the information.

Any fave function activities for 8th grade inclusion class?! Thx in advance.
    • Mathalicious - To see all the lessons that address function standards on Mathalicious.com:
      1. click lessons
      2. select functions from "topics"
      3. click go
As you mouse over each lesson icon on the site, you can read the gist of the lesson. This will let you know a little about the lesson and help you decide if you might like to teach it. I hope this information helps!

Looking for resources to engage a group of 15 year old boys in maths, who are told that they dont need 'taught maths' in the real world... anyone help?
    • Mrs. Ratcliff - Have you checked out mathalicious resources? They are targetted for young men and offer a context and motivation for doing Maths- great stuff! Here is a link to their YouTube channel, but they have a website with lesson plans for a very reasonable subscription price, and are a group/community on edmodo too. Hope this helps! https://www.youtube.com/user/mathalicious

      • Mrs. Franklin - I second this recommendation! My kids are engaged and thinking at higher levels without realizing they are doing math.

Does anyone have any good articles on math literacy? I am using problem solving puzzles and the ipad in conjunction with math literacy. Thank you.

Does anyone know of any good stimulations for rolling two dice and another one for tossing a coin that would work for android tablets? Thanks in advance.

Interesting to show your students and bring up discussion using the mathematical practices.
    • Dr. Levy - I loved this. The problem is my students agreed with Bud's logic.

Hi! I am working with 3rd grade accelerated students this year. Will/does Mathalicious have any activities geared toward this audience? Thanks.
    • Mathalicious - The short answer is...not really. Unfortunately. We're a small crew, and we're currently focused on middle and high school content, because that's our wheelhouse. Our big-picture plans involve developing content at all grade levels, but we don't have any near-term plans to create much at the elementary level.
Thanks for much for your interest.

Hi, Can anyone recommend a good resource for problem solving (word problems) at the 6th grade level? Something that has lots of variety with example solutions. Thanks
    • Mrs. Karlsen - I'm sorry if this is really simplistic, but I like mathisfun.com and khanacademy.org. Those are my too favorite math sites for a number of reasons.

    • Zach Post - Thanks. I also like those sites. I have been enjoying watching the evolution of http://learnzillion.com as well

Just had to share...I started the Roots of Squares with my advanced seventh grade math class this week. Most of the students were frustrated, because the lesson had them thinking in such a different way than has been asked of them. One of my "less than focused" students blurts out in the middle of the lesson..."Now that's what I'm talking about! This is the kind of math I LOVE!" Yep, worth every penny I spend for the subscription to keep students like him engaged! Thanks for such great resources!
    • Mathalicious - We're so happy to hear that your students responded to the lesson! Thanks for letting us know, too. Sometimes we get to feeling isolated here in Curriculum Land, and we miss teaching kids, in spite of the general stickiness that tends to follow them around.

Are we alone in the universe? How can the Drake Equation help us estimate how many other civilizations might be out there?
