I used termites to set up groups based on student preferences. I asked my 8th graders to list students they didn't want to be grouped with and ones they did. It worked out really well. The only issue I had was when student A said they wanted to work with student B, but Student B said they didn't want to work with student A.

I'm trying to download the termites seating charts app but I get a message that "termites has been discontinued". Is it still available?
    • Mrs. Tipton - I got that message, also. I wish they had, for lack of a better phrase, left a forwarding address. Then, maybe someone could have bought the program and kept it up.

I don't understand how this works. Surely putting in all the student information in order to get back the right combinations must be more time consuming than to just place them around the room yourself ?
    • Mrs. Tipton - It depends on if you prefer computers to paper. Yes, putting the student information in is time consuming at first, but you can just upload your roster and then add in your relationships. I can type my roster faster than I can upload it. Also, this only has to be done once, and then if you find a new combination of students that shouldn't sit with each other, you add it. Other than that, it's just a few clicks of the mouse to get a new chart.
I tried it before I bought it and tested it on a doozy of a class. It had to think for a whole minute, but it gave me

Does anyone else get the "Termites has been discontinued" message when they go to their website?
    • Mr. Pulgarin - Yeah, I saw that message too. Sad, since the software is actually very practical and useful!

      • Ms. McElvain - That's too bad. Wish I had done my new seating chart earlier!
Does anyone know another site? (maybe a free one?)

        • Jan 12, 2013
      • Ms. Candelario - The termites program will still work, but there is no support for it. http://www.superteachertools.com is a pretty good site, not great but it's a good substitute.

        • Jan 14, 2013
      • Ms. McElvain - Thanks. I bought the Termintes acct, so mine works right now.

anyone else having issues with termites freezing up frequently? I have to keep forcing shut down and then reopening when I want to generate a new seating chart if I do not like the one generated.
    • Mrs. Tipton - On my work computer, mine freezes up when I try to change where the desks are located. At home, it's fine.

      • Dec 3, 2012
    • Sam Sirois - that is exactly what is happening to me... I wonder why at work only? I will have to try at home and see if there is a difference. Thanks for your input!

    CALLING ALL BEGINNING TEACHERS!!!!!!!!

I created this group called Beginning Teachers. It is aimed as a platform for beginning teachers to help each other out, chat to each other and swap resources.

Please feel free to invite other beginning teachers (approximately 0-5 years experience.) We currently have members of the group with 6 and 7 years experience, so we are not very strict on experience! Also if you have twitter/other social networks, feel free to pass on the message. The more, the merrier!!

I thought it would be a good platform to help each other out. The Join URL is:

I tried to use Termites to generate groups based on whether students had passed a standard, were close to passing that standard, or really struggling with that standard. I edited the CSV file with the student list to give the students who had passed the standard an ability of 100, those who were close 50, and those really struggling 0. I created a seating chart with groups of tables big enough to hold each group. Then I asked Termites to group by ability. I unchecked "relationship" (there are no relationships in the file anyway) and the program mixed the students: it insists on splitting the students with 100s and mixing them with the 50s, even when I trim the groups so that the number of seats exactly match the number of students in each group. Help?!?

    • Ms. Broekman - I finally got it to work, by rearranging the groups of desks so they're all the same distance from the 'front' of the room, but this seems unwieldy when the number of groups is bigger than about 3...

      • Ms. Broekman - And it doesn't work every time. I end up pinning students and moving them around manually anyway...

        • Feb 9, 2012
      • Termites Seating Charts - Ms Broekman! You are a champion. Thanks for uncovering such a subtle problem and even finding a solution. Let's be honest though, it is just a work-around and we should try to make Termites behave as expected. I've added the issue to our list of work and will address it as soon as possible.

        • Feb 10, 2012
      • Termites Seating Charts - Oh, and I really love your idea about grouping by standards. Its fantastic to see you using the abilities as thresholds. I guess Termites will always require some manual tweaking, the algorithm has to balance being general enough to handle all the different ways teachers use it and specific enough to handle the common cases well.

        • Feb 10, 2012
    • Mr. Laugesen - Would be great if you could email the .TER file you are using Ms Broekman to richard@tinyrock.com. Then when we go to improve this we can use your case as a test :) Thanks!

New version of Termites just released - version 2.5.2

    Download from http://termitesapp.com/download

Fixes bugs reported by our nice little Termites tribe over the last couple of weeks:

    - Improved the algorithm which decides where to place students
    - Normal users can use Termites which has been installed and unlocked by an administrator user
    - Write log file to user home directory instead of install directory

In parallel to these bug fix releases we are continuing to work on the next feature release version due early 2012. So, please continue to report bugs and request improvements, by doing so you are directly influencing the direction Termites takes - http://support.termitesapp.com/forums/2023065...

I have several classes of 38 students. Is there a way to add these additional students?
    • Termites Seating Charts - Thanks for question Mrs McCormick.
You can have as many students in your class list as you need. There is no arbitrary limit of 30 for example. You could even do the a seating chart for the whole school assembly if you really wanted to :)
      Does this answer your question?

      • Mrs. McCormick - Thanks. Also, is it possible to add 5 squares for attendance? I like to print out my seating charts each week in order to do this and make notes on regarding behavior.

        • Nov 18, 2011
      • Termites Seating Charts - Great idea, I know a few teachers who use the print outs that purpose too.
An easy way to make those 5 squares would be to add desks to the room view. Just be sure to 'exclude' them from the chart so that students are not assigned those seats. When you print there will be 5 empty squares ready for you to use for anything you like.
Would love to know if this works for you.

        • Nov 18, 2011
      • Mrs. McCormick - Actually, the seating chart program I use right now puts 5 small squares under each student's name for attendance. That is an option I would like. Thanks.

        • Nov 18, 2011
      • Termites Seating Charts - Ah, I understand. Which seating chart program are you using now?
I think that idea is possible to implement in Termites and it will certainly make taking attendance easier. Especially for casual teachers once we finish implementing the student photos feature.
I encourage you to add it to the feature request forum though so other teachers can vote it up: http://support.termitesapp.com/forums/2023065... . Will start

      • Mrs. McCormick - I just tried to add students past 33 and the program would not let me. Please help. We have really large class sizes!

        • Nov 18, 2011
    • Termites Seating Charts - Those *are* very large classes! Manually deciding where to place more than about 15 students quickly becomes very difficult. I expect you will find the automatic placement features in Termites quite useful.
Just opened up the latest version (v2.5.1) and added 68 students. Works just fine past 33 students so there may be some gremlins in your set up. Which version are you using? Can check in Help->About in Termites
