Hey Guys,
Was wondering if you anyone had any good Pi Day activities that were fun and hands on. Let me know if you have anything for grades 5 to 8 because I'm a new math teacher trying to learn new tricks and want it to be a fun math activity.- Mar 13, 2013

Ms. Allen - I've got kids involved with using ritz crackers and cheap vanilla wafer and any other ok circle food and string. I get the students to discover that the circumference is a little over 3 each time of the diameter. They get that's why they use pi without me telling them. They typically think its pretty cool to discover the reason without being told specifically why. I use this with 7th grade.

Trying out the Algebra tile app...is there a way to "cover up" the expressions (outside of using the pen to "scribble" them out)...I wanted to show students a picture of the tiles and ask them what expression it represented. Also, is there a way to create something using the app and then create a snapshot of it to post on an Edmodo page? I can always do a screenshot of it, but I was also thinking that i could ask students to use the Algebra Tile app to model something and then post it and share/discuss. For example...use exactly 10 algebra tiles to show an equivalent expression to 3x+2. Each student could show one way and post it...Trying out the Algebra tile app...is there a way to "cover up" the expressions (outside of using the pen to "scribble" them out)...I wanted to show students a picture of the tiles and ask them what expression it represented. Brainingcamp Online Math - Mrs. Paris, thanks for describing two great use cases. I feel fairly confident that we can do something to hide the expressions. Capturing and posting images might be a little more difficult. But we'll discuss with the development team when everyone is in the office on Monday and get back to you again. Thanks and warm regards, Brainingcamp.

Brainingcamp Online Math - Mrs. Paris, we added a switch to turn off the expressions. If you don't see this new option in the bottom-left corner of your app, you may need to clear your cache (either using browser menus, or by restarting your browser and/or computer). A feature where students could submit their screen content other than by taking screenshots is unfortunately much more complex. We have added this to the app "wish list" for future updates. Thanks for your feedback!

Do you have anything for 4th grade understanding of simplifying fractions?- Feb 18, 2013
-
Brainingcamp Online Math - Mrs. Beardsley, the closest we have on the Edmodo app store is an Equivalent Fractions app. It helps students understand that fractions are equivalent when numerators and denominators are multiplied or divided by the same whole number. It also helps students understand when a fraction is in lowest terms. The only thing I can think is missing in terms of teaching equivalent fractions is how to find factors. Hope that helps!

Can you show the Brainingcamp online math models in a lesson?- Feb 3, 2013
-
Brainingcamp Educator - Hi Deborah,
You can use the models in a lesson. Each topic has a narrated lesson with interactive models which you can present to the whole class, or let students view individually. Each topic also has a virtual manipulative model which work great for teacher guided lessons.
If we misunderstood the question or if you want to know anything else, please just ask.- Feb 4, 2013
