Hello everyone! I would like to share my Action Research over iPad's and literacy. Please feel free to suggest possible interventions for Phase 2, after looking at the data from Phase 1. Thanks

I just published a survey that is collecting information from schools and districts on their iPad deployments. I am trying to push out through all the channels I know that can get the word out. The data will be shared between schools and districts to view how others are implementing MDM, professional development, digital curriculum, etc. I am going to create an executive summary in about a month once the survey has reached enough people.

Up to this point I have not seen anything that has compiled information that would be useful to other districts that are also implementing iPads into the classrooms.

Any help getting this out would be greatly appreciated.

4th grade teacher looking for advice on how to manage the use of personally owned devices in the elementary school setting. I would love to have my 4th graders bring them! What are the positives and negatives? Are they ready for this???
    • Mr. Rasmussen - What about those that might not have a device? Does the school have extras for loan?

      • Feb 26, 2013
    • Mr. Talmadge - Thanks for sharing your desire, Mrs. Chartier. My experience tells me that 4th graders would be the perfect grade level to try a BYOD experiment. In would echo Mr. Rasmussen, what do you have available for those students who may not have access to a device at home?

      • Feb 27, 2013
    • Mr. Harrison - I would really check with the IT group to see what type of internet access, if any, this would allow for in your setting. It would be a shame for all your work to go for not. Also, there should be a minimum set of reqs that you have with your devices. You should isolate what you want to be able to do with them (internet, pdf viewing, etc...) with what types of devices support your classroom activities. Almost every K-12 BYOD figures this out a bit late.

I teach a unit on Roman Houses. I usually have students build a 3d model of a roman house and label all the rooms in Latin. I am looking for ideas on how to spice that up. Can anyone think of a student friendly way to do something similar but digitally?
    • Mr. Talmadge - There have got o be some great apps for that. How about Google Sketchup?

      • Jan 28, 2013
    • Telannia Norfar - I recommend google sketchup as well. It is free and easy to use. I didn't even teach my students how to do it. I referred them to tutorials. I would also suggest having them design a current day house using roman influence.

      • Jan 30, 2013
    • Mr. Harrison - Love Google Sketchup! I thought they moved to a cost thing last I heard, but AZ got a grant and they are fee around here. Don't know about Boston, sorry. I also like Sketchfab for some basic use. Here is an example (farm house for your feudal unit) and it is free https://sketchfab.com/show/nyxbdc5QCaccdzIQYa...

      • Mr. Mubarrak - thank you for your advice, but it only cover Asia, Africa, & the Middle East, Australia, Canada, Europe, South & Central America and United Kingdom.FYI I live in Indonesia

      • Ms. Watson - You can use google forms. There are many tutorials you can google. It's easy even without google accounts to start with a spreadsheet and turn into a form - then you can use the url which I give to students to fill out. You get real time feedback.

        • Jan 7, 2013
      • Mr. Mubarrak - Thank you for your suggestion Ms.Watson, but what I want to do is utilizing handphone (mobile phone) that almost all my students have. FYI that not all handphone have wifi connection, so I think SMS quiz will be better way for my students and they can answer my quiz wherever they are

        • Jan 10, 2013
      • Mr. Watson - Sorry I'm late to the party. Mr. Mubarrak, if you're still looking, have you tried StudyBoost? (https://www.studyboost.com/) It's not a program but a Web 2.0 site. You can create an account, then make SMS quizzes that students can add to their accounts so they can take quizzes via any cell phone, or even other messenger services like Facebook Chat or Yahoo Messenger. It's also free.

    • Mr. Mubarrak - Thank you very much Mr.Watson, I'll try it :)
