Thanks for the great tips to help my child!! I had forgot all about those scribe pens and I will use videos from Khan Academy or Bing to help him learn to be an active listener and a better note taker. The lap top is a wonderful idea; however , my 4th grader's class does not use lap tops.- Dec 4, 2012

My son has problems taking notes. When I visit the class, Jacob is not taking notes and when I ask him why he says he is trying to understand what is going on the board. Do you have any ideas or tips that we can use to help him take notes in his math class?- Dec 4, 2012

Mrs. Holzweiss - Definitely get a livescribe smart pen!

Ms. Dulaney - It is more important that he follow the instruction and record the information to copy notes later. This way he will be able to ask questions while the subject is still being discussed. If he finds that he must copy word for word rather than being able to condense into his own more concise words, he will need to work on this skill. This is better accomplished with playback of a recording and discussion before writing which needs to be one-on-one practice with a tutor and the student or a parent and the student. Notetaking is difficult for some students to do and ingest the information at the same time. Ask for video tutoring options to do at home so that he can pause, take notes, and then continue at his own speed. Technology is his friend, but he needs to communicate with his teacher about his need to focus on the board and then take notes.

Ms. Breitbach - In my class, I assign someone to take notes on their laptop (we're a 1:1 school), then the notes get "shared" (using googledrive) or forwarded (via email) to students who need them.

Ms. Dulaney - Ms. Breitbach, this is a great idea. students learn note-taking skills from each other. I have also used a video cam or heard in districts that allow have given permission for the lesson to be recorded on a smartphone and a voice recognition program like Dragon is used to take the notes.

Mrs. Lownsbery - These tips were good - I wish people would follow these tips and not have too much info on one slide. they need to have larger print size and one thought to a page.
