Pearltrees allows you to cultivate your interests. You can keep everything you like in just two clicks and then organize what you’ve collected in your own way to have it at your finger tips, or to share easily. The unique visual interface of Pearltrees, allows you to create an unlimited number of folders and subfolders, making it fun and easy to manipulate your pearls and pearltrees. Because Pearltrees is a collaborative digital library, you can discover the pearltrees others have already organized on topics that interest you. For this you can explore related pearltrees, use search, or let yourself be guided by the notifications you receive. Pearltrees also allows you to follow the activity of pearltrees organized by other enthusiasts. By “picking” a pearltree and adding it to your account you will be informed when new pearls or comments are added. Finally, you can collaborate with other enthusiasts to organize a topic as part of a team.Pearltrees allows you to cultivate your interests. I have two weeks left and need a project for my Digital Communications class. We have done presentations, storyboards, creating webpages, and videography. They are doing storyboards for freelance movies this week, but I am not overly happy with the results and think we may need to change gears. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (This is primarily a 9th grade class at this point)- May 17, 2013

Ms. Tipton - A great new social networking site is called VINE that you could use for this project. The gist is to make a 6 second stop motion video...the students could focus on one topic. The app allows you to video and share to certain other social media sites.

Mr. Thomas - I actually did a short film project with my 11th graders using Vine. They were to write a script with the goal being to tell a complete story in 6 seconds. They had a lot of fun with it!

Ms. Symes - Is this something available through Android too?

Mrs. Zoglmann - Thanks, I am checking out VINE, it looks quite promising.

Mr. Thomas - Ms. Symes - My students told me there was something similar for Android, but I'm not certain how well it works.

Here are the documents that I have made for "Build Your Own Dream House." It was originally created for 5th graders, but can easily be modified for older students. There are extensions included that could be requirements for higher grade levels. Hope this is something that others can use.- May 17, 2013

Liam Bayer - Check out DNA Barcoding Invasive Species! http://www.hightechhigh.org/unboxed/issue6/ca... - Students will take part of a pilot study for a large-scale ecological survey of San Diego Bay to help prevent and slow the spread of invasive species through early detection, rapid response, and eradication, ultimately reducing the effects of bioinvasions on human health, the economy, and the oceans. Hi everyone. I am in need of ideas for PBL math grade 7 projects: I'm slowly preparing my next year's lessons and would like ideas of different projects. Anyone care to share with me some of their ideas? Perhaps, in geometry, algebra, probability, fractions, etc..??
Any ideas would be welcome! Thanks!- May 17, 2013

Mrs. Estep - I have a "Build Your Own Dream House" project that I love using. The kids love that it has a real-world base and they can be as creative as their math skills will allow. Skills that it includes: area/perimeter, computation (possibly with decimals and fractions), estimation, budgeting. Let me know if you are interested. I'm new to Edmodo, but may be able to figure out how to put the documents in my library for you to use. If not, I can email them to you.

Buck Institute for Education (BIE) National Faculty member, Mike Gorman, writes about how Project Based Learning (PBL) is a natural and essential connection to teaching Science, Technology, Math and Engineering (STEM). As schools and teachers look at the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards for math and literacy, we should, as the famous educator John Dewey said, “Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.”- May 16, 2013

Watch this NEW video about ACE Leadership High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which organizes its program around the fields of architecture, construction, and engineering. The school serves students who were formerly at-risk or who had dropped out of traditional schools, and uses real-world projects to teach subject-area content and 21st century competencies. Like the Manor New Technology High School that President Obama visited last week to kick off his "Middle Class Jobs & Opportunity Tour," ACE Leadership HS is one of our Model Project Based Learning (PBL) Schools.

Does anyonr have and projects for World Geography? I am new to PBL and could use some help getting started.- May 16, 2013

Ms. Swanson - One year, when I taught World Geo for 7th Grade, I had them decide where to put a company for a particular type of business. They chose the type of company themselves- so I had kids opening a skateboard shop, hunting outfitters, clothing stores, etc. They looked up a lot of different demographic information about the place and determined in which country to place the business based on what the demographic information told them. For example...for the skateboard shop....he found a place that had an age ratio showing a young population but had to have a high enough GDP to be able to afford leisure items. They had to compare a variety of factors in order to justify their decisions. In this way, there wasn't necessarily a "right" answer but there were better answers. If I did it now, I would have them write it up using a routine called CER- Claim, Evidence, Reasoning. Here's someone's blog that helps understand it...

Looking for some freshman level physics PBL ideas. Force, motion, 2D motion, free fall, Newton's Laws, etc. Algebra skills vary quite a bit.- May 16, 2013
-
Ms. Swanson - I've considered having kids do a project where they have to recommend a policy for/against bike helmet laws for kids. They would have to know a lot about all of the things (except maybe free fall) and could do a lot of investigations to build the necessary background knowledge to make the policy recommendation.

Mr. Hall - I like that idea Ms. Swanson. We have designed one where students use Newton's Laws to create a PSA about seat belts.
