Hi all! I am a 6th grade math teacher and have used this activity in the past to work with volume. I have tweaked it to fit my needs, so feel free to do the same. Sadly, I have NO IDEA where I originally found the idea. I am NOT the originator of the activity, but I love it, so I thought some of you might! I use it after our state tests to allow for further real world application of the topics. ENJOY!- Yesterday

Hello. I am trying to find a project that my 6th grade math students can do after the EOG's. Not really sure what standards I would like to focus on. I'm just looking for something that they will enjoy doing as a wrap up for the year. Any ideas? Thanks!- Apr 19, 2013

Mrs. Avery - I posted an activity that I use with my 6th grade students (C-Level and Honors) called the Aquarium Blueprint. It isn't very difficult, includes a rubric, and is a real life use of volume!

Converting measurements in the metric system is sometimes difficult for children to remember. I love this Brain Pop video, which helps my students remember a metric chart. They make this chart just prior to testing as a part of their testing tool box. Many find it helpful.- Mar 27, 2013

HI All, I'm looking for ideas to help my 1st graders relate place value to real world use. Any ideas?- Mar 22, 2013

Mrs. Crapis (Mrs. C) - Hi Judith, One of the things I did when learning place value was have the students count out small rocks (get them from $1 store) and count out ten at a time in a small container with a lid (also at $1 store.) These rocks will be placed in a baggie ahead of time (a different amount in each baggie -- could be 50, 65, 72, 93, etc.) It will be the kids' job to count out by 10's and whatever amount is "left over." Then, they will record the amount of 10's and 1's on a recording paper (e.g. 5 tens; 7 ones = 57). They can also record an "estimate" of what amount they think is in the bag before they begin. When I did this activity, I modeled it first and then put it out as a center. The kids worked in pairs. They had to place a lid on the container once it had 10 rocks, but at the end, whatever was left over - not amounting to 10 - the lid was not put on. When done, the kids counted the containers and left overs. They got more used to the concept of place value with this activity. Hope that's one idea you can use. :-) ~ Lynn

Ms. Thumm - Try plastic money! I motivate my first graders at the end of the year by letting them earn pennies for correct answers, good math talk, etc. Their names are in a pocket chart and they put their pennies up beside their name. When they get to ten pennies we trade for a dime. As students earn more money they begin to find it easier to count their dimes by tens then their pennies by ones. I'm pretty generous with the pennies, because I want them to get larger numbers. My students also like to figure out how many more pennies they need before they get to trade for another dime (hello missing addends!). They are all trying to reach ten dimes because that is when they get to trade for a dollar.

Mrs. Collins - Hi there:) I like to use play money. I use dimes and pennies only for this game. It is a lot like playing store. They have to decide how many 10's (dimes) to use and how many ones (pennies). Another game is to use a deck of cards and dry erase boards. You pull out a card (take the Kings, Queens out....leave in the Aces to be used as a one, Jacks to be used as a zero). Kids decide if I pull out a 9 where to write it. Do they write it on the ones or tens side of the board. They do the same for the second number. They then show the value of their money using base ten rods. I ask them to compare their numbers with the neighbor and decide who has the largest value. If you don't have base ten rods, then substitute dimes and pennies. Lots of fun and the really grasp the concept. Let me know if you try it and if you like it. Tina
