I'm a 6th. grade math teacher here in Miami, and I want to know how the Virtual School works. I heard that students failing classes can apply for this program during summer vacation. Does anyone know about it?

I graduate with my second Master in Science in May. I have completed the application to teach here at Vss. Should I wait till my Diploma date on May 11th to click submit? If I don't, it looks as if I haven't completed the Degree. Any suggestions?

I need ideas to offer some virtual incentives to my students. I used this my first of year of teaching (6th grade LA/SS) and I was reflecting on ideas and I suddenly remembered this BOOK ADVENTURE concept where kids read x amount of books and take a test on the book. Then, once x amount of books are completed and tested, then students are able to print certificates to get FREE STUFF across the USA. PRIZE LIBRARY: http://www.bookadventure.com/prize_library.as...

    SPONSORS: http://www.bookadventure.com/about_us/sponsor...

As a librarian, I am, for the most part, against this type of thing philosophically because it could potentially make kids focus on the prizes instead of the love of reading. Then, again some kids need those rewards. It is all about balancing the reward system and not making any student feel badly--I would like one that would allow the teacher to differentiate the reward.

So, I am open to trying something like this in the virtual world because BOOK ADVENTURE and sites like this could have its place and place a positive spin on learning--with rewards we would not normally be able to offer since we are so far away.

Like any good reading program, it is all in how the teacher presents it and carries out the plans. So, like I said...it could have its place as long as there is balance.

Direct link to BOOK ADVENTURE: http://www.bookadventure.com/Home.aspx

The bottom line, I am NOT looking for a reading program, so much as I like the concept of being able to pull from a prize library/database where kids can print certificates and be able to take it to a store and exchange it for something cool where the teacher is in charge of setting up the reward system anywhere in the USA. Ideas? Thoughts... Opinions? I would love hear what you are doing for incentives virtually. -Lindsey :)

Seeking advice! I have a student who is frustrating their "Learning Coach" by arguing about subject content. I thought about making a button or badge for the "Learning Coach" explaining to the student that they are to respect the "Learning Coach" at all times. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. :)
    • Mrs. Price - We had a similar situation recently and gave the coach some suggestions for "classroom management". She felt good knowing that she wasn't alone, first. She then liked the ideas that helped her organize a little more and give some more responsibility to the student. She can always apply a behavior system (red, yellow, green, etc) with agreed upon rewards for good behavior. Just like a classroom teacher would do. Not sure if that will help, but it is worth a shot.
