This document has the list of vocabulary words that students should master by the end of 5th grade. I guess teachers can start introducing some of them in 4th. The first list indicates that it is a review from 4th. We find that students lack the vocabulary needed to maneuver through some of their reading passages most of the times. We underestimate the importance of academic language at the elementary level. This list could probably help…

Greetings to my fellow Global Colleagues,

There is no doubt that modern technology is a great innovative tool! They have generated a smaller world, connecting us worldwide in so many different ways. However, the demands of using technology in our classrooms and in our everyday teaching, has placed pressure and stress on many of us.

How can we be innovative and effectively use the tools that have been provided to us? How can we use modern technology as tools for students’ empowerment and learning?

As geographical divisions are becoming irrelevant, Global Citizenship has become an obvious part of our students’ identity. It has become our responsibility to educate our students on their responsibilities as Global Citizens. I believe the best way to do this is to provide opportunities where they can play active roles in solving global issues.

I have started a project called ‘Ferfereh: Global Youth Communication Channel’. Which can also be taught as an extension Geography Unit: Global Citizenship. This project affirms that in order for young adults to positively respond to the globalization of their lives they must identify with the concept of Global Citizenship.

This project foreshadows the need for greater collaboration between communities and schools in resolving major international issues. Students will collaborate with other students and schools around the world to take part in their manifestation and encourage them to also become active members of the Global Community.

This is only a very new project and an idea worth exploring. I have been trialing it out at Miller Technology High School since start of this year. While the violation of children’s right to quality education was the focus, the students decided cultural exchange would be the best way to approach this project.

My year 10 students have been designing lessons and are in the process of recording themselves teaching, which will be sent to Afghanistan. I will be taking the recordings and the information with me to Afghanistan when I go in May. Through Skype sessions Sydney girls can see the result of their work and receive feedback.
    The Project’s mission is:
    • To build confident youth and give them a voice, through giving students ownership of the activities/project.
    • To provide students with opportunities to achieve infrequent outcomes.
    • To use peer to peer learning to build trust and social/global capital amongst the youth.
If you are interested and like to see what students at Miller Technology High School have achieved visit their Facebook page: Ferfereh (GYCC). A website will hopefully be up and running for this project, where students can share these lesson plans and other students can globally share them. As this is a new project, your feedbacks on how to improve and make it accessible and beneficial on global level, is highly appreciated.

If you are interested and like to hear what my students have been doing, we can organize a Skype session where students talk and discuss their project, and you can also tell us how you would like to be involved.
