CALLING ALL BEGINNING TEACHERS!!!!!!!!
I created this group called Beginning Teachers. It is aimed as a platform for beginning teachers to help each other out, chat to each other and swap resources.
Please feel free to invite other beginning teachers (approximately 0-5 years experience.) We currently have members of the group with 6 and 7 years experience, so we are not very strict on experience! Also if you have twitter/other social networks, feel free to pass on the message. The more, the merrier!!
I thought it would be a good platform to help each other out. The Join URL is:

I tried to use Termites to generate groups based on whether students had passed a standard, were close to passing that standard, or really struggling with that standard. I edited the CSV file with the student list to give the students who had passed the standard an ability of 100, those who were close 50, and those really struggling 0. I created a seating chart with groups of tables big enough to hold each group. Then I asked Termites to group by ability. I unchecked "relationship" (there are no relationships in the file anyway) and the program mixed the students: it insists on splitting the students with 100s and mixing them with the 50s, even when I trim the groups so that the number of seats exactly match the number of students in each group. Ms. Broekman - I finally got it to work, by rearranging the groups of desks so they're all the same distance from the 'front' of the room, but this seems unwieldy when the number of groups is bigger than about 3...- Feb 9, 2012

Ms. Broekman - And it doesn't work every time. I end up pinning students and moving them around manually anyway...- Feb 9, 2012
-
Termites Seating Charts - Ms Broekman! You are a champion. Thanks for uncovering such a subtle problem and even finding a solution. Let's be honest though, it is just a work-around and we should try to make Termites behave as expected. I've added the issue to our list of work and will address it as soon as possible.- Feb 10, 2012
-
Termites Seating Charts - Oh, and I really love your idea about grouping by standards. Its fantastic to see you using the abilities as thresholds. I guess Termites will always require some manual tweaking, the algorithm has to balance being general enough to handle all the different ways teachers use it and specific enough to handle the common cases well.- Feb 10, 2012
-
-
Mr. Laugesen - Would be great if you could email the .TER file you are using Ms Broekman to richard@tinyrock.com. Then when we go to improve this we can use your case as a test :) Thanks!- Feb 11, 2012

I have several classes of 38 students. Is there a way to add these additional students?-
Termites Seating Charts - Thanks for question Mrs McCormick.
You can have as many students in your class list as you need. There is no arbitrary limit of 30 for example. You could even do the a seating chart for the whole school assembly if you really wanted to :)
Does this answer your question?- Nov 18, 2011

Mrs. McCormick - Thanks. Also, is it possible to add 5 squares for attendance? I like to print out my seating charts each week in order to do this and make notes on regarding behavior.- Nov 18, 2011
-
Termites Seating Charts - Great idea, I know a few teachers who use the print outs that purpose too.
An easy way to make those 5 squares would be to add desks to the room view. Just be sure to 'exclude' them from the chart so that students are not assigned those seats. When you print there will be 5 empty squares ready for you to use for anything you like.
Would love to know if this works for you.- Nov 18, 2011
-
Mrs. McCormick - Actually, the seating chart program I use right now puts 5 small squares under each student's name for attendance. That is an option I would like. Thanks.- Nov 18, 2011
-
Termites Seating Charts - Ah, I understand. Which seating chart program are you using now?
I think that idea is possible to implement in Termites and it will certainly make taking attendance easier. Especially for casual teachers once we finish implementing the student photos feature.
I encourage you to add it to the feature request forum though so other teachers can vote it up: http://support.termitesapp.com/forums/2023065... . Will start using that list to more...- Nov 18, 2011
-
Mrs. McCormick - I just tried to add students past 33 and the program would not let me. Please help. We have really large class sizes!- Nov 18, 2011
-
-
Termites Seating Charts - Those *are* very large classes! Manually deciding where to place more than about 15 students quickly becomes very difficult. I expect you will find the automatic placement features in Termites quite useful.
Just opened up the latest version (v2.5.1) and added 68 students. Works just fine past 33 students so there may be some gremlins in your set up. Which version are you using? Can check in Help->About in Termites- Nov 18, 2011

Mr. Pulgarin - You guys should create an edmodo "Termites" badge to assign to teachers who purchased the software!- Nov 8, 2011
-
Termites Seating Charts - Thanks Mr. Pulgarin! That's a great idea about the badge. We'll start cracking on it rightaway!- Nov 8, 2011
-
Mr. Laugesen - Turns out we can't create community badges to give to teachers. Edmodo are looking into the idea though. And as soon as it happens we will be sure to create some to give out.
In the meantime, I've created a Termites badge in my profile that you are welcome to grab and give to your students if you like.- Nov 13, 2011

Version 2.5 is done!! I hope you are as excited as us, the new features are awesome.
I've just sent it to our wonderful beta testers and will do the public release later this week.
Keep the votes coming in on that button name though, it's not quite set in stone yet. -
We need your help! We have a new feature in our upcoming release of Termites which needs a name. The new "Select Student" button will randomly select a student from the class and highlight them as yellow in the seating chart. Which of these should we label the new feature button?
- Select Student 12.5%, 4 vote(s)
- Pick on me 12.5%, 4 vote(s)
- Select Random 12.5%, 4 vote(s)
- Who's next? 46.88%, 15 vote(s)
- Random Student 9.38%, 3 vote(s)
- I don't care! I just love the new feature ;) 6.25%, 2 vote(s)
-
Termites Seating Charts - Thank you all for the votes. By popular demand, we have labelled the button "Who's Next?". You can find this feature and many others in Version 2.5.0. Thanks again!- Nov 8, 2011

Yay, 70 wonderful educators in our little community! Was only a few days ago our little Termite was jumping around because he met 50 of you. -
It would be great if the new version gave teachers a way to upload a picture of the student. Just a thought. I am loving the software!
Thanks,

Medellin, Colombia-
Termites Seating Charts - Thanks William. This is something we really want to see too!
Secret - Richard has already implemented most of the code to get student photos into Termites. It's just not polished enough to make it into the next release in a week or so. Will be in the next one for sure though.
Please go put a vote this up in the "Feature Requests" forum so we know it's important - http://support.termitesapp.com/forums/2023065...- Oct 24, 2011

We now have 50 members on our Termites community! Welcome to all our new members :) -
Thought you may be interested in seeing a work-in-progress view of Termites v2.5...
Here is what the new printouts currently look like, nice improvement on v2.0 I think. You can also select paper size, margins, etc and it will resize to fit perfectly, no more spanning two pages! As you can see, student gender has also made it into v2.5 and you can now group and separate students by gender as well as relationships and ability.
Any suggestions? -
Hello everyone - just felt like saying hi to all the new members of our little community :)
Would anyone like to be a beta tester for the next version in the next couple of weeks? Basically, you just need to install it, try all the features out, and then send Richard an email saying what doesn't work.-
