    CALLING ALL BEGINNING TEACHERS!!!!!!!!

I created this group called Beginning Teachers. It is aimed as a platform for beginning teachers to help each other out, chat to each other and swap resources.

Please feel free to invite other beginning teachers (approximately 0-5 years experience.) We currently have members of the group with 6 and 7 years experience, so we are not very strict on experience! Also if you have twitter/other social networks, feel free to pass on the message. The more, the merrier!!

I thought it would be a good platform to help each other out. The Join URL is:

I found this video created by Polar Bear International titled Polar Bear Myths and Facts. I thought it would be great video to create a class game for my students to play on International Polar Bear Day.

Celebrate International Polar Bear Day with a Call to Action

When: International Polar Bear Day is February 27th. Celebrate on that day or in that week—and consider using it as the kick-off for an on-going commitment to reducing CO2 in your community.

How: Bundle Up for Polar Bears is a fun and meaningful way to honor polar bears on their special day. The idea is simple: turn down the thermostat by two degrees on February 27th to lower carbon emissions and help save polar bears. Encourage students and teachers to bundle up in their favorite warm clothing to help raise awareness on this worldwide conservation issue. Or take it a step further and hold a competition of themed sweaters (craziest pattern, ugliest, animal, etc.) once a week for two months.

Why? Reducing our carbon footprint can slow and even reverse global warming which causes sea ice to melt. Polar bears require sea ice for reaching their prey. Without sea ice, polar bears can’t survive.

I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU! I had three science classes come in and watch one each of the 3 webcasts, and they all enjoyed it. It was a great experience for the students, and for me, my first webcast in the classroom! My principal and vice-principal came in and where amazed. Thank you so much again!

    Issues downloading:
Is anyone else having issues downloading? I wanted to save the PPTs included in the Community Collection for the teachers I am working with to use with their students. I can only save the All About Polar Bears PPT (that one downloads as a zip file). The Polar Bears in a Warming World PPT and other resources download as complete webpage not PowerPoint. I notice when I open them they open in their own minibrowser window. Am I doing something wrong? Or were they uploaded differently? Thanks so much, Mrs. Shields

Also, my class (and my son) loved your edmodo shirt today...are those available?

From Mrs. Cantrell 5th Graders in Gypsum, Kansas.
How much body fat does a polar bear need to survive? How long can they survive without food?
Will the males hurt the cubs?
Do they always move alone or do they sometimes move in packs?
How are they able to hold their breath for so long when they swim/dive for food?
Will polar bears attack or eat humans?
How long do cubs stay with their mothers? When do cubs begin to hunt?
Is the polar bear's food declining in population also? Is this contributing to the declining polar bear population in addition to climate change?
