I am having trouble viewing Episode 3. It won't seem to download on my computer, but the other episodes do. Help?
    • Inanimate Alice - Hello Randi,
It is good to hear from you.
We do hear that occasionally schools have difficulty in downloading episode 3. It is working fine on our server and we have viewers online with it presently. Typically, the reason relates to the fact that the file size is much larger than the other episodes. It could be that the cache on your computer is full or that there are some restrictions placed on file size by your IT management. It is hard to say what it might be from this end.
Also, please check which browser you are using....and be sure to have the latest version.

Can Inanimate Alice be used with year 10 students?
    • Randi Downs - As I look through, it seems more geared to middle grades?

      • Ms. McGraw - It can definitely be used with older students - I have used it with grade 9 to explore the concept of 'digital storytelling', and with year 10 to discuss use of sound in multimodal texts.

        • Jun 3, 2013
      • Ms. McGraw - NB: Alice gets older in each episode - you could also do some text intervention & creative writing around what Alice is like as a teenager and/or adult.

        • Jun 3, 2013
    • Randi Downs - Thank you! And that kind of fits with the concept of Transmedia Literacy, which I am thinking of exploring with students next year, as well as digital storytelling as a genre. Thanks!

Transmedia experiences, such as following the digital novel “Inanimate Alice,” are integral because they help students dig deeply into narratives that interest them, and encourage media engagement as well as visual and oral literacy.

We're seeing Edmodo classes connecting with Alice, one after another, all day long. That's great! Tell us how you're doing. Let us know what we can do to help.
    • Mr. Arbuckle - I'm extremely lucky to be working in a 1:1 iPad learning environment. Unfortunately however, we cannot view Inanimate Alice on the iPads due to your story being in flash as opposed to HTML5. As more and more schools are moving to an iPad environment, due you foresee yourself publishing your amazing work in the HTML5 format?

      • Inanimate Alice - Many thanks for your comments, Andrew. Subject to funding, we will be reworking the Inanimate Alice episodes so that they are available for all devices. We have done some work on Episode 5 in this format and the results are exciting. It isunfortunate that you cannot access the series right now, but you can grab the magazine version of the Australia Season on iPad........have you looked at this?

      • Mr. Arbuckle - Thank you so much for your quick response. The magazine component sounds great and I'm definitely going to check it out. I'm also excited to hear that the whole series will soon be available for all devices. Do you have any idea of when this update will be happening?

        • Apr 27, 2013
    • Inanimate Alice - Unfortunately, no, we do not have a launch date for the all devices versions. The 'subject to funding' caveat, is an ever-present concern. We are in the midst of discussions and as soon as we have any news we will be sure to make an announcement.

Just heard about this ina teacher's seminar. I'm thinking of using it to entice my kids to write about what they think of each story, maybe throw in a few open ended questions to start it off. I think these stories will engage them!

    We need your help!

We are coming to the end of Season 1: Alice in Australia and are much in need of feedback whether this storytelling approach is working before we ask Alice to adventure further. We are looking for comments from teachers and parents as well as students to tell us what is working and equally, what can we do differently and better.

There are so many questions arising. Here are a few pointers:

    1) Is the story enjoyable in this multiple format delivery?

    2) How about the pacing - one story per month for a year - does that provide benefits?

    3) Are the digital components - scripts, images, music tracks, graphics - of value to you?

    4) What about the printable sheets - are you using them?

    5) Are you using Snappy? Tell us how it is working for you.

    6) What can we do differently......and better.

All comments are most welcome. We need your evidence!

    Many thanks, Ian

    • Ms. Kirk - Our school has Macs in the classrooms. They don't run Snappy so we've been using Powerpoint. I'm really looking forward to seeing their finished products next week some time. The various images of a Ba-xi have been popular as a resource for t most of my students.

      • Mrs. Froggatt - I used Inanimate Alice with my Year 6 Literacy Class last year. I haven't used it at all yet this year or looked to see if their are new resources. My last class had BYOD (Bring your own device) so we didn't use work sheets at all. The digital content was enough to inspire the students and they produced sensational work samples that I saved to our class blog. I can send a link if you like.
This year I want to use it to promote critical thinking in my Christian Studies unit and pose questions about how students might respond from a biblical perspective if they

    • Inanimate Alice - We are working on plans to develop more content, episode 5, 6,7 ......and more seasons like the Australia series.....and to make the materials/resources available for all devices. It takes investment. We have just completed a proposal to the Gates Foundation where its Literacy Courseware Challenge identifies an acute need for literacy materials in Grades 4-8,. The call for proposals speaks directly to Alice, so fingers crossed.......
These comments are very helpful. If you get the chance to post student content to this thread please do so.

Looks cool, any 5th grade teachers out there want to share how this went with their class????
    • Inanimate Alice - One of our teachers just taught this to a 5th grade class and it went great. It was a part of a wider genre study in which digital was introduced as a 'genre'. Students were taught how to effectively read a digital story and applied what they learned to their own personal narratives.

      • Mr. Slaughter - I have done it in fifth for a couple years now. I am now teaching overseas, 8th grade. I'm looking forward to the international experience of my new students and how this works so well with the spirit of Alice. One change I made between years one and two were that I started building a 'digital library' of images, video, sound, etc. created by students from year one. This was cool and really helped. I love the idea of building this library (and even sharing it more broadly with other classrooms). It included short bits of music created in GarageBand and little more...

      • Inanimate Alice - Hi Steven........it's very helpful to get your report. I see that you are in Nairobi, these days. In many ways and for a host of reasons this is an ideal place from which to see the world through Alice's eyes. Here's hoping your new students will continue to help build your digital library. We're hoping you can share some stories - or even some snippets like the moments you mentioned - with us and the community. Cheers, Ian
