JUne 18 ISTE SIGVE Speaker - Gord Holden
Gord Holden was recruited by Heritage Christian Online School 2 years ago (2011) to bring this transformative pedagogy to their homeschooling and distance learning programs. He now trains teachers across BC and in Alberta on the use of a wide variety of 3D virtual learning environments (VLEs). This leverages the creative and innovative nature of their students and obliterates the physical and cultural divide that isolated them from each other. This is an exciting and growing field that tends to engage even the most reticent and challenged learners. WNYC’S SchoolBook hosted a dynamic conversation about the innovations and challenges in the growing field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education, particularly what is happening in New York City schools to improve STEM literacy for all its students. Bob Vojtek (RL), BJ Gearbox (SL) is currently the Director of Technology for Avon Public Schools in Connecticut. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in Education Policy and Management. Bob has worked as the Director of Instructional Technology for Harvard Law School and Chief Information Officer at Concordia University and the University of Hartford. He was also Dean of Vocational Education at College of the Redwoods and a consultant for Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Studios. Bob (BJ) is the current Chair for the ISTE SIGVE and Artistic Director of the Virtual Education Journal (VEJ).
Rosie O’Brien Vojtek (RL), Roxie Neiro (SL) is currently the Principal of Ivy Drive Elementary School in Connecticut. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in Curriculum and Instruction. She has worked as a teacher, Curriculum Director, and principal in several districts in Oregon and Connecticut. Rosie has served as the National Staff Development Council President (2000), National Association Of Elementary Principals (NAESP) State Representative and currently serves on the NAESP Resolutions Committee. Rosie is involved with the Connecticut Association of Schools and was awarded their highest Award of Commendation (2013).
