Please share one major takeaway from this course. Feel free to add any other relevant comments or feedback.-
Mr. Mok - In the context of ICT implementation, change is the only constant. As a HOD of ICT, I can adopt PALS (Planning, Articulating, Leading and Sustaining) for change. In addition, it will be essential to consider other factors like the mental model and readiness of staff. It is also very insightful and informative for me to learn from peers from other school based on the Flipped Presentation. Hopefully, i will be the change agent for my school.

Mr. Tay - Change is a constant. However, change may not be always welcome by all. The first step towards change will be the changing the mindset of the change activist. The change activist must first believe in the change and experience the change for themselves. Without this conviction, little will be accomplished.
My initial perception for gaming has always been gear towards the negative perception of it taking away precious time from study, leading to poor results in the students in some instances where gaming addiction is concerned. The idea of using games for learning is relatively more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. Anita - Be the change. It is okay to fail as failure will bring us to another level higher towards a more enriching learning. Failure will breed success. PALS framework serves as a guide in implementing change and it has given me an insight in managing and leading change. Many know that there is a need to change but there are indeed many obstacles to it. Hence, dare to make the change and remove the barriers that block the change. This course has made me realise that with careful planning, change can happen successfully and it can be sustained as well. An insighful elective more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Kwee - The HOD/IT can take the lead in various plans. They need to ensure proper planning, articulating, leading before rolling out. Most and foremost, there need to be buy-in esp from the IP HODs, as they are the one to run the program. Thus, they must also be involved in the discussion and planning. A key obstacle is the fear of results dipping, and whether IT is needed. The response could be why not?
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. Lee - I find learning truly meaningful for this elective as learning embodies the spirit of GBL (learning from hands-on experience to doing it actually). The linear flow for buy-in leads to ownership and with ownership reaping sustained change is an interesting visual illustration. However, I hope that the linear flow can evolve to the reinforcing virtuous loop and set the basis to the sprouting ICT culture. I can understand that the rationale to the linearity echoing the need to articulate change as a constant reminder, be it that technological landscape is constantly shifting. more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. Tan - kudos to Ashely in how he organized and conducted this elective which is not easy to teach change. I have learnt how to introduce change in pals framework. I especially like the flipped classroom concept and I will definitely implement it in my classroom.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Ng - Change is the only constant. As MM, we should lead the change in school and PALS approach helps to guide and manage change. In today's flipped presentations, articulation of the rationale for change is key to implementation of changes in the school. The course also made me realize that with planning in place, changes will take place smoothly but it is also important to consider strategies for sustaining the change.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. Lim - I would greatly treasure PALS as it is very crucial to making change possible. I would apply PALS in any idea and initiatives which I would put into the school.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. Siew Hoon - My mindset in certain areas has been changed. I like the idea of flipped classroom though I wonder if it works with weaker pupils in the class. My major takeaway is the articulating and sustaining change with ICT. For ICT to be more prevalent, I got to pay more attention to the articulation aspect as instead of just sharing with the management but to other stakeholders as well. I should also pay more attention to sustaining change, an area that I have gotten complacent about.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Hamwal - The Flipped Classroom is an enabler to better engagement in learning because
1. It is a smaller group
2. There is a ready audience (bought in)
3. Thoughtful use of time for learners to move around
PALS is a great tool to not only understand Change, but also to understand the context of where Change will be introduced.
Implementation is a messy process, but messy means there is engagement.
Getting down in dirty in doing PALS of change is common, before the goals of change can be seen.
"when integrating ICT, the focus is on Pedagogy, when more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. Tan - Change is a constant feature especially in the portfolio of HOD ICT. Very importantly, the change needs to centre on people, to equip them with the skills for PALS. Only then there is deep learning and change can be enculturalised.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Tan - I have learned a lot from Ashley and everyone in the module, my sincere thanks for that. I particularly liked the concept of the flipped classroom. It is something that is both doable/feasible and also a great way to effect better pedagogy.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mindy Ng - Managing the psychological aspect of change is as important as managing the physical and structural aspect of change. Context and people are also key components of change. PALS and the various frameworks of adapted PALS that we have look at are also useful guides to keep in mind when implementing change. The MXL room itself has also provided an interesting example of the use of space which I would consider in the upcoming PRIME. Sad to see it go.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. BH - Change is seldom seen as positive. The course has provided experiences that presented possibilities more than challenges and I think that staying positive and enthusiastic is very important when leading and managing change. The learning on principles for GBL had challenged my own mindset about playing games for learning and I see potential for a certain level of implementation in school. I questioned my own thinking as well as behaviour when going through the plan to implement a change, it is an excellent mental exercise, though putting it to work is another story. Being able more...- Aug 23, 2012

Mr. Ho - It is a blessing to be in this course. The insight and practical use of Flipped and PALS make real sense in the implementation of ICT. It caught me thinking and reflecting on my current and futue ICT plans. It must be something I dare to do and feasible and well supported. If I am not the change in my teaching, my teachers ad school leaders will not believe in the change. There must also be reasonable and balance use of ICT and ancient technology. Achieving Cooperative and Collaborative learning is different and the objectve and purpose of my future ICT lesson must be carefully more...- Aug 23, 2012

Mr. Andy - Time flies! I still remembered that after the first lesson, I was kind of regret that I had signed up for this elective. I was overwhelmed with the criteria set by Dr Ashely. The non-traditional ways of presentation really stressed me up at first.
However, despite the demanding assignments, my perception of this elective changed as the weeks progress. I got excited and looked forward to the weekly presentation from my peers instead. I have indeed learned a lot in terms of the theories and strategies being applied to every stages of PALS. In addition, I really like the more...- Aug 23, 2012

Mr. Tan - Leading change is more than just acquiring physical resources, changing the mindset of people is a more challenging task, but can also tapped as powerful coalition to enable change. The course has far exceeded expectation and has benefited immensely from this class. The experience gained in the entire course will be remembered for a long while. Thank you.

Ms. Yeo - A major takeaway for me is experiencing Assessement As Learning in this module. I learnt and inspired to learn even more from the tasks assigned.

Mr. Wum - Thanks Ashley. This is the most mind-blowing course that I have attended so far. It is not just ICT but a whole new mindset change.
Should non-ICT HOD sign up for this course? Why not? Should we use game based learning in our classroom? Why not? Can we use flipped classroom approach for lower band learners? Why not? Will we have the time to do all these? Why not?
The next time whoever asks me whether something can be achieved, I must learn to ask 'Why not?' Some time we don't have to follow the rules blindly just to be politically correct. We can more...- Aug 23, 2012

Dear all
I have re-uploaded my revised Flipped Presentation for your comments.
Thank you. :)-
Ms. Tan - A well thought plan to leverage on the broadcasting studios for curriculum and co-curriculum areas. As there is a lot of work involved in coordinating the various departments initiatives, your mini-tvs committee will be crucial in helping you with the implementation. However, you have told us this is something that was endorsed by the school leaders, so I think that is a very important success already. All the best to your plan and I believe the greatest beneficiaries are the students in your school.

Mr. Andy - Thanks, June for your encouraging comments.
I have given a written proposal of my plan to my VP for approval last week.
If it is approved, I think I will send this video clip to all staff for their feedback. :)- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Hamwal - Hi Andy,
Nice clip. A very bold and creative idea in using broadcasting as a platform for T&L.
You can think of working together with Ngee Ann Poly 'Film and Sound Video' department.
I am just curious, what would you propose to 'let go' for this to take off? It seems pretty ambitious and I am sure teachers would be feeling that they have to do more, and they dont really want that.
I am just thinking of TLLM.- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Tan - Hi Andy,
I believe under your proposal the usage of the broadcasting studio will be very high. Need you to claify: will it benefits only a small group of students involved in the production or everyone of the students has opportunity to use the studio?
Like the tempo of the clip, somehow the music keeps lingering after watching.- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mindy Ng - A very exciting idea, Andy! As Ed mentioned, perhaps a learning journey to Ngee Ann Poly or even Mediacorp would be useful to gain insights to the inner workings of an established tv station. I was wondering if your school has an ELDDS or Photography Club. If so, I think they can also be part of your plans? You mentioned that the studio is being used for drama production and dance. Currently, who has the technical expertise to handle the equipment or train the pupils to handle the equipment?
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Tay - Hi Andy, like the mini-TV proposal where students are involved in all phases of the production. Some points for consideration:
1) Target of one production per year may be too low to gain the awareness by the school committee.
2) Mini TV can expand to include news report of school happening for the week. Selected students can be the news broadcaster to read out the announcement. The clips can be air via school TV messaging system.
3) School TA and ICT support can form the secondary line of technical support..
4) Students can form part of your coalition more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Mok - Hi Andy, here are my inputs for your consideration.
1. Look into possible curriculum integration into English and MTL curriculum especially the communication skills. This can be part of improving the oral skills of the students.
2. You want to focus on the storyboarding skills of the students as a good broadcast will need a good organization.
3. As part of training of the students and giving students the confidence to speak, you may want to give opportunities to share a story in class or assembly. This will give the students the confidence to speak in front of more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. Anita - OOohhh... nice studio. Wondered if all the teachers have the chance to try it our before so that they can understand how it works. It looks as if your school is moving towards a greater scale of implementation which will lead to bigger success, I believe you ca do it!
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. BH - Hi Andy, thank you for shring your well-thought through ideas. I used to have a broadcast studio in my previous school and we have problems sustaining the use because of the demands of the syllabus and the full support of the heads. I am thinking of having a similar studio in the school I'm in and your plan has offered ideas that I can propose and use to excite. Thank you! I wish you the best in the proposal to enhance learning with the studio and we should connect beyond the MLS so we can exchnage ideas!

Mr. Andy - Dear all
Thanks so so much for the feedback, advices and encouragement. It was my principal's dream to have one in my school. The setting up of this studio was a tedious process as I have to seek for approval from 3 departments from MOE to convert an existing CP Lab into a studio.
Currently, the studio is mainly used for Sec 2 and 3 videography enrichment prog , media club activities and some lessons recording. Btw, we have an ICT trainer stationed in the studio to provide the technical assistance to teachers at all times. Hence, teachers need not worry about more...- Aug 23, 2012

HI All,
Thanks for viewing and do comment aight!-
Mr. Ho - Hi Riza,
Good storyline towards the presentation. I guess you must have a hard coordinating the different mode of media to engage us to view.
I realise you have different lot of challenges as compared to mainstream schools. Your students will tend to be slightly more interesting than ours. However, I applaud your approach and willingness to give it a try to make sure ICT happens in your school. May be it will another kind of SDL and CoL different from mainstream schools.

Mr. Hamwal - Hi, yeah I admit I'm still, at times, lost among the ICT norms and practices in mainstream schools that are discussed quite extensively.
But I have learnt quite a lot these past few weeks.
I see using technology as one way to include my colleagues, and importantly the students, to not be excluded from societal norms.
Students have family members who are using the popular technology, and hence I hope the school enables the students to use some, if not all, of the same technology.
Thanks for your kind and encouraging words!- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Hamwal - Change is indeed uncomfortable when it begins ;)
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mindy Ng - Hi Ed, thanks for a very detailed presentation. I thought it was very well thought out too. I'm not very clear on the subtle differences between the special ed schools. Perhaps Pathlight, Chao Yang School or MINDS etc would be interested in something like this as well. If so, working with them could provide you with an special ed perspective that would be useful in implementation.
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Anita - good mix of the tools to engage the viewers but as it is not stable, it is quite challenging to view the presentation. To what extend is the slates useful and beneficial to the students? What are its limitations and challenges that you face and overcome?
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Mok - Hi Ed,
Based on my dialogue with teachers from Pathlight, they do have some ICT activities to engage the students. I can cite one example where the students learn about Scratch Program in designing simple game building and animation. If you are interested to find out more, i can liaise and establish the contact for you.
I applaud you for the efforts and hard work in engaging the students' learning experience. Jiayou!
Cheers,
Boon Foong- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Hamwal - Hi Anita, yes I admit that at the beginning it is quite difficult to be engaged with the clip :)
The slates are useful only if the teachers use them..and use them well for T&L.
I would say for my context, the teachers do find them useful although how teachers use them really depends on the individual student's need.
The main challenge is in seeking a really competent teaching and learning experience as the slates are new to many of them.
I am trying to get teachers from Subject Committees to come and share how effectively they use the slates.
Hi Boon more...- Aug 23, 2012

Mr. Hamwal - I must admit that the slates are only 1 medium, there are the Wii Console, computers that I want teachers to use as well.

Boon Hian-
Mr. Tay - Hi Boon Hian, some points for your consideration:
1) technology affordance for flipped classroom - platform to house the video, systematic way to organise the video for students access, centralised software for video editing vs distributed choice across departments
2) mindset of teachers in doing recording - some may be resistance to the idea especially if they need to be in the video.
3) Realistic targets for flipped classroom - is it all the lessons in one shot in 2013, or progressive targets 20 % in 2013, 50 % in 2014 and 100 % in 2015 - Flipped immediately more...- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Kwee - Hi, it is good that you have identified a core group. However, as mentioned some Seow Heong, issues are present. But if the initial idea is successful, the program can be enhanced to include typical lessons that students can learn on their own to enhance the flipped element. Need also to address teachers concern that not all students may be attentive and the need to cater to this group. Also, while it may seem easy to record lessons, very often, distractions galore in class (e.g. discipline issues), thus may need someone to edit, and this may be perceived as more work.
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Tan - My suggestion is to consider planning (to implement in 2013) to showcase the better or best flipped lesson monthly (e.g staff mtg) for awareness and developing a culture. Even better, devote a section of the yr end 'Learning Festival' or staff retreat, staff will be relaxed then, making it easier to get the pt across.

-
Hon Sok Foon - Hi,
don't forget to consider the many other digital interactive media available.
The important thing is to combine this with good pedagogical approach. It is critical to make it engaging, otherwise, students will switch off. How you know whether your students have learned? remember to build in strategies to enable students to monitor their own progress and for teachers to know what they have to intervene.- Aug 23, 2012

Mr. Ho - Hi Ben,
Well Done!!!! It is really a great effort from your end. I guess CamtAsia studio was quite easy to use. I find that your sharing is really authentic and it causes me to relect on some of my school programmes. Whether we are using the right approach in technology.
You are definitely on the right track to make the change because you have made the first step to change. It will be great to have you in my school. (Wishful thought) Haha.- Aug 22, 2012

Ms. Tan - Very sincere presentation and deep thinking into your proposal to want to use flipped classroom in your school. I agree with you that History is a good subject to leverage on this concept as ICT-enriched resources like videos can be viewed offline and more time can be devoted in the classroom for deeper discussion and HOT skills. I have seen your HOD ICT and humanities teachers in action at the recent ICTLT, With your school's teachers' capacity, IT infrastructure, students profile and positive learning environments already in place, I can see your conceptual plan more...- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Tan - Hi Benny,
Great effort!
Think many of us are exploring Flip Teaching, it is going big way. Articulate urgency to teachers, it's time to build up our competencies. Creating online materials is one of the challenges, that it's only 1st half of the game; the processes in the classroom is the 2nd half of the game.- Aug 22, 2012

Mindy Ng - Hi Benny, fantastic effort in putting together this presentation! (very clear even though it was unscripted). I'm also thinking of trying out flipped classroom in my school for PE so it's quite exciting to hear that you are trying it out for your school too. The nature of the subject and disposition of the pupils are advantages that you can definitely leverage on. I would like to hear from you on the progress of the implementation when it happens. It would probably have some similarities to carrying out flipped classroom for primary social studies (both pedagogy and more...- Aug 22, 2012

Ms. Anita - Like your positivity in leading change. It is good that you raise the implementation issues as it is going to be a new idea in your school. Maybe when leading by example, you might want to rope in a few significant others so that the ownership is there. Start with a small enthusiastic teachers who can and support you so that there will be greater buy-in because I believe that for change take place in school, the leaders in leading change need to be a small group instead of you alone. You can try it first though, then some teachers will want to know more and this can be more...- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Ho - Hi Alex,
Not too sure whether I should comment here or at the google docs. Anyway I will use this platform first and in the case of using google, I will just cut and paste.
The presentatin has alot thought about the use of convincing and asking teachers to own the ICT lesson. You have clearly presented the needs and challenges faced in the school. Your staff diversity is pretty similar to my school and I face similar diffculty.

Mr. Mok - Hi Alex,
Just to share with you my feedback.
Can i check with you how being BYOD will bring about more SDL and CoL? Maybe you will like to elaborate more. I feel that to bring about more SDL and CoL, the crux is in the lesson design not just the device.- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Kwee - Hi thanks for the replies.
Kok Soon: Serendipity is the accidental successes. It is hoped that teachers through realising that students learn better with their devices that they latch on. However, this may not be a given. BYOD does not equate to 1-1 computing. While ideally 1-1 is best, not all students may have this. Easier to justify BYOD than school buying or asking parents to pay.
Boon Fong:Agree, this is just part of the overall initiative to strengthen SDL and COL in college. The trainings e.g. does not focus only on the use of the devices but also on SDL and more...- Aug 22, 2012

Hi all, I have attached my flipped presentation on 'Flipping FTPPS' ( a conceptual plan to introduce Flipped Classroom in First Toa Payoh Primary School). Both video files are similar except their extensions. Thank you in advance for your time and feedback :)-
Dr. Tan - I viewed the MP4 file.
I am glad to hear that you are rising to the flipped classroom challenge.
Be careful about adopting using the model at the 3min 6 sec mark. That model is an opinion or description at best. It is not a prescriptive model.
The worst way to use that model is view each quadrant as part of a sequence (the original blog post described it as a cycle, http://usergeneratededucation.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/the-flipped-classroom-model-a-full-picture/).
I would love to hear progress of the actual implementation!- Aug 22, 2012

- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mindy Ng - Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I'm excited about giving this a go but I do have some queries on the nature of flipped classroom itself. My ICT mentors are currently leaders of PLCs for their level/department (except one who went on maternity leave) so they would have gained the experience of leading the level/department. I'm also looking at the PE department for the impact and influence bit. Shall discuss more about it tomorrow :)

Mr. Tay - Hi Boon Fong, Some points to consider:
1) Yearly weeding of students accounts after they leave the school
2) Access of teachers to the students accounts for communication and deployment of google apps.
3) Icon account for communication between HQ and teachers in school. School based gmail accounts for interaction between teachers and students. There is a way to merge the school based gmail accounts with the ICON email.. Show you when we meet up

Mr. Mok - Hi Seow Heong,
Thank you for your suggestions. Here are my responses.
1. With regards to the yearly weeding of student accounts after they leave the school, i am thinking that the students will keep their email accounts. In this way, the school will be able to keep in contact with the alumni and keep them with the school events and activities. It will serve a mean of communication channels with our alumni.
2. I plan to have a class group so that the teachers will have a easier time in communicating with the class and in the deployment of google apps. I do not more...- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Kwee - Hi, my two cents worth. Depending on your LMS provider, they are able to grant all accounts a windows live or google apps account. Ours in asknlearn and they automatically create a catholicjc.edu.sg account tied with gmail at the beginning of every year. After every year, we move the account to an alumni.catholicjc.edu.sg. However, evidence is that most students do not use the account after school as they would have their own email given their age.

Look at the existing non-ICT program in the school. How can Google doc makes it better. Sell it!
in my school, whole sec 2 level works on a Science project over 1 full semester. The ICT mentor partners the ICT mentee to pilot of use google site to make monitoring of students' progress much easier. They shared their success story and this year the whole is on it. Mr. Ho - Hi Chris,
Thank you for the presentation. A lot of learning and personal review of my action plan too. I like the idea of structuring te use of mobile carts. This is critical and somehow we are monitoring the use of the carts. It is accountability to our budget that we have parked for such use. I will use your idea to schedue my school mobie carts to prevent them in becming white elephant.

Mr. Andy - Thank you for sharing your flipped presentation. My school has started the initiatives quite similar to yours. However, the wireless network provided by NCS has been giving us so much problems since it was officailly activated early this year. The other main challenge that we are enccountering is the competency of conducting effective SDL and/or CoL lessons by teachers. :) I am looking forward to your presentation tomorrow. Thank you. :)

Mr. Hamwal - Hi Chris, good breakdown of thoughts and ideas on Glogster.
Barrier to change are common despite different backgrounds of each school, and how you plan to deal with that by making sure the ICT Mentors, HOD ICT and ICT Rep support the rolling out process is commendable.
Andy, how is the wireless network giving your school problems? Intermittent wireless connections or mostly no wireless connection?
and yes, competency of conducting effective SDL and/or CoL lessons is also an issue I grapple with. For my school background, differentiated learning is widely practiced more...- Aug 22, 2012

I experience the same problem when the new Masterplan 3 was rolled out and what I did was to really sit down with my members and talk it out. You need to be very clear about what defines ICT-infused lessons as some teachers really have no inkling what it is all about. Provide lots of exemplars that you can get from ICT connection and show them when they design their lessons so that they will not be led astray. Am glad that you are aware of your school current reality in ICT as I think we always more...- Aug 22, 2012

Ms. BH - Hi Chris, I like the way you put all into a single overview. The ideas are clear and the challenges real (esp trs' mindsets) relevant to our own experiences in school. I am eager to hear how you are engaging your ICT mentors in working towards the goals of mp3!

Ms. Siew Hoon - Hi, thanks for sharing. I am wondering if the monitoring put in place helps. Like you, my school tries to structure in ICT lesson into curriculum but I find monitoring very difficult. Look forward to learn some tips from you.

-
Mr. Mok - Hi Chris,
some suggestions for you to consider.
1. In terms of building staff capacity, you may try to leverage upon the cluster ETO to give the overview of SDL and CoL and lesson redesign.
2. Alternatively, you may try to look at the existing ICT lesson plans by your teachers. Put in some scaffolding in terms of essential questions for the SDL and CoL. It will lower the barriers of entry among the staff.
Hope it helps!
Cheers,
Boon Foong- Aug 23, 2012

Dear All, attached is my flipped presentation for 1 to 1 concept in school. Do give me your feedback on how it can improve upon for actual implementation. Thank you.-
Mr. Ng - Hi Seow Heong,
Thanks for the detailed presentation. Just my two cents worth:
1) Planning & articulation - Your inclusion of the setting up of charging point in the classrooms to support 1-to-1 learning might lead to the school to incur much higher electricity cost. For 1-to-1 programme, you may need to articulate to all users/parents on the need to be responsible for fully charging their devices on a daily basis.
2) You may want to plan for Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
Thanks!- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Tay - Thanks Chris : )
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Kwee - Hi well thought out but some points to note, like that highlighted by Chris on the issue of AUP. It will be easier if the 1 to 1 can link to some school wide pedagogy/framework in T & L. Also it would be easier to implement through a level first before moving to the whole school (maybe I miss this in the presentation). While it is good to start big, need also to consider the fears of teachers. Need not only to work with the IP heads but also the SD side to incorporate elements of cyberwelless into the program. Lastly, the co-curriculum can also serve as a possible leverage more...- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Tan - Hi Seow Heong,
I think the role of the teachers and their mindset is most important to address. 1 to 1 computing is a whole new game, can we manage under the current structure without losing the human touch in education?
Like your presentation, but the words on the "creating Short-term Wins' a bit too small.- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Anita - Seow Heong, I am actually for 1-to-1 computing too but like you mentioned, its lack of budget and it is quite hard for us to really convince parents to buy it. Thus, it is firstly important to ensure that our curriculum demands the use of computers across departments and it is being used meaningfully. Am glad that you think through of th implementation issues. Like your presentation and will use it for my as a guide as my target is not in 2014 but maybe 5 years down the road.
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Tan - Actually, since 1-1 is going to be the norm in the future, MOE can do a lot to help schools by bridging the gap with the public. This can be done thru the Minister's speeches or even National Day Rally! Wouldn't take make the buy-in and convincing much easier?
- Aug 23, 2012

-
Hon Sok Foon - I'm putting on the hat of an IP HOD and thinking aloud here: How will this make learning of my subject better? What is my role? Do I have the competencies to lead my team? What kind of competencies do my teachers need?
Unless you address some of these concerns, the 1:1 computing may not be able to transform learning. Teachers may end up using ICT for the sake of ICT and not to transform learning experience to develop 21st century competencies.- Aug 23, 2012

Hi all,
Please find my flipped presentation attached. Feel free to comment. Thanks.-
Ms. Lee - Thank you for the detailed presentation. Would like to learn more about the school overcome the start-up difficulties and buy-in from teachers. Any plans to expound the idea beyond Science? Thank you and looking forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Ms. Tan - Thanks for the detailed glog. Wondering how did the school identify mobile learning to be the strategic technological tool for Science? It seems that it's initiated by the ICT department, does the Science department not feel resistant to it? Any data that has been collected to indicate this change is sustainable?
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Wum - Hi Mrs Tan - mobile learning is really the way to go. Thanks for sharing how you school is spearheading this for the cluster. May I ask if the use of these gadgets take place within the curriculum time or as a form of after school enrichment? How often do your teachers use them? What kind of support do you get from the vendor when it comes to developing the resources? Can you also share what is the strategy you use to get the teachers on board to embrace this? Thanks and looking forward to hear from you!

Mindy Ng - Hi Wendy, thanks for the comprehensive presentation of the project. I'm also working with my Science department on a mobile learning trail in school using an LMS-provided tool and apps. Shall discuss more about this with you tomorrow.

Ms. Siew Hoon - Hi Wendy, thanks for sharing. The first thing that crosses my mind is that the iTOUCH is unlikely to become white elephants because of the detailed planning and the time invested in it to ensure that the content is relevant. Look forward to hearing more about this. My science HOD will be very keen, :)

Mr. Ho - I will amend the video without the inclusion of the videos. Thank you for the advise.

Dr. Tan - One other thing: You embedded your YT video in a Google Site. You can save yourself the trouble by submitting the URL of the YT video directly. :)

Mr. Ho - I could not do that due to the two youtube video. They took up too much time and space. Will remove the two after tmr review and I think should not have problem uploading. Thanks.

-
Ms. Anita - Good effort. Am wondering if you are going to focus on all the 21st century skills as it can be quite daunting. Not sure if you might want to focus on SDL and CoL first as it is in the Masterplan framework.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Mr. Ng - Hi Kok Soon,
Great job for presenting a detailed PALS. I agree with Anita in that you may want to consider SDL & CoL first. Leaders (SLs & KPs) can 'walk the talk' by engaging and leading staff, levels and dept meetings using SDL & CoL.- Aug 23, 2012
-
-
Ms. BH - Hi Kok Soon, I find the part when you shared on the challenges facing schools in the 'teaching' of 21CC skills interesting. The 3 key areas can be a quick guide to what we are trying to do wrt this in schools. :)
Agree with you(as you earlier shared) and Chris that the leaders do play an important role in focussing efforts as well and showing the direction to head for SDL and CoL. Getting the teachers to experience it for themselves is worth the time.- Aug 23, 2012

Hi fellow coursemates. Have fun viewing my presentation and give your feedback:) Thx.-
Mr. Ho - Hi Aniat,
Thank you for the Galaxy Tabs idea. It is consolidated idea for us in using ICT for Science. The video draws me to think how to rethink my method of teaching. It is true that our pupils really know alot. It is sometimesmy assumption that they do not know anything. TIme for my personal thinking.
1) Can I find out how does email make articulation clear to our teachers about your plan?
2) How does Galaxy help to make teachers own the programme?
I think these are some questions you will be addressing during the presenation on Thursday. Looking forward more...- Aug 22, 2012

Mr. Ng - Hi Anita, Thanks for sharing your your G.T.S. programme. I like the idea of using Galaxy as it allows the viewing of flash content.
Just a question for you:
Who will help in your planning and implementation? Team? Should be from Science dept.- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Lim - Hi Anita, my school is also having a trial project on GT in Science. Maybe we can discuss a bit more and look forward to collaboration. Just want to check: you had formed a team of yourself and the Sci head, so how will you be getting the "buy-in" from your teachers, considering there's not a lot of Sci periods.
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Andy - Thank you for sharing your flipped presentation. It is indeed a great initiative but I think that your team will need more planning in buying-in from the teachers so as to ensure that the hard work in the implemention is equal to the impactfulness of students' learning.
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Anita - I like the buffet spread of the ICT courses that teachers are given. Who conduct these training? What happens if there are only a few responses toward one ICT training but it is crucial? What did you do? Hmmm..will want to find out more.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
-
Ms. BH - Hi Anita. Thank you for sharing your idea in doing this in Science. I am excited to see if this really works out in your school and how SSOE becomes a NO-issue in this case. Science is an area where there is great potential for SDL and CoL. Perhaps you can share with us later on how the tabs may be used beyond Science too for ROIs.

Mr. Tan - Hi Leslie,
Creating urgency is most effective in creating a changed mindset. By sharing what others are doing, for teachers to realise the need to stay relevant and build their competency, otherwise it may cost them their job.- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Tay - Hi Leslie, like the ideas about teachers taking the initiatives to determine what is good for them. They know best and we do not want to play the doctor. Some points for your consideration:
1) alignment of departments ICT applications need to teachers ICT training. If IP Heads can articulate what are the key applications they used, teachers in the same department who lack the skills can sign up for the training.
2) While teachers may sign up, concerns about the occupancy rate for each course. If trainer is to cater to just 1 or 2 teachers at a goal, effort may not more...- Aug 22, 2012

Dear all, please kindly see my flipped presentation for a concept in school. Do give me feedback on how I can really make it happen (Possible? Within a year?). Please share your thoughts with me. Thank you.-
Mr. Ho - Hi Bih Huey,
Your musuem is in great shape. You definitely have presented your entire idea about what you want for your school. Just a few personal view and it may not be helpful to your presentation.
1) What is the budget that you are given? It may cost a lot.
2) Are you the chair person for this project? It will be great to have someone who knows the history of Mee Toh as you are doing the history of the school. Maybe get the most senior person in the school. You will also need to have a lot of the Mee Toh pictures and definitely your school must have archived more...- Aug 22, 2012

-
Mr. Ng - Hi Bih Huey,
Great work and I like the concept of G.E.A.R.S. as an approach to experiential learning in your school. Is this approach to learning also applied to other disciplines?
Just my two cents worth:
Is the museum learning intended as a whole school programme or is it limited to only certain levels? If it is whole school approach, you may need a diverse group of people from all departments to be part of your team so that they can align the museum experience to the IP and non-IP content. Thanks for sharing!- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Anita - Big idea. You have thought it through. Wondering if there is going to be customised content area for different levels and which subject area are you going to carry it out?
- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. BH - Dear Kok Soon, thank you for your encouragement and advice! I am not the chair for this and have not proposed the budget for the plans yet. These are ideas springing from the experiences that I had with musuems and I'm not looking to have all, but some of the features of that interactivity. I know it will be costly and hope some of it can happen, I may come back to you for advice if you do not mind, at a later point in time. The chair is our SSD and she has been with the school for a very long time so the history part should be fine and I like history :) I will start to more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
Ms. BH - Dear Chris, thank you very much for the encouragement and cheers :) I am looking at the musuem supporting key IP programmes as well as non-IP but that will take a lot of art to communicate intent and value-addedness and work with the heads to gain consensus on key skills that the activities can support. Thank you for the advice on having diverse groups of people to work on the idea, I will include that in my proposal to the school when I return!
GEARS is something that I am keen to embark on for ICT and I think it is generic enough to apply to the other areas. If it gets more...- Aug 23, 2012
-
-
Ms. BH - Dear Anita, thank you for the encouragement. I am not trying to park this with a subject because the plans hinge on the value of learning heritage and common sets of skills for the children which would ideally cut across subjects. Your idea on using the tabs may be an idea I can explore too!

Dear all, please kindly provide feedback for my flipped presentation (accessible via QR code or the link attached).

-
Ms. Tan - I like the idea that you are leveraging on lesson study which was pervasive in your school. ICT as a selling point to help the teachers in their lessons study journey will certainly make it more lessons more enriching and easier to promote SDL or col as compared to one with no ICT involved. I like your gloster interface with clarity to the pals framework. Well done!
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Tan - Your glog is very aesthetically pleasing with a theme! Wondering if ICT mentors are equipped with the skills to do lesson study? Though they have undergone the ETD training, lesson study requires more specific skills? Is the lesson study integrating technological knowledge with pedagogical knowledge too?
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Lee - All teaching staff are equipped with the skills to do Lesson Study as we have been in this for three years. We do have simple performance indicators for the integration of technology into our lessons. Perhaps, we could buzz more about the second question about the integration tomorrow.
Thank you for the kind feedback, Ms Tans :)- Aug 22, 2012

Ms. Lee - Thank you, Andy for the kind feedback. Will be most glad to share and learn from each other. Perhaps, we can buzz about this more tomorrow.
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Mr. Wum - Hi Li Lian - You sure got good taste in designing the glog. Steady lah! I can see that your school is very ambitious! It is very demanding to implement whole school approach for lesson study given the amount of time and coordination needed. Hope to learn from you how you win the teachers over to take the plunge in this. See you!
- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Siew Hoon - Hi, nice glog, :) just a few questions.
1) can you share more on how monitoring was done?
2) how was 1-1 computing achieved?
3) Was there a pre-post done before implementation of ICT to strengthen teachers' beliefs that ICT helps?
thanks!- Aug 23, 2012
-
-
Ms. Lee - 1) Monitoring at the departmental level by the respective heads, for school-wide monitoring by myself (HOD/ICT) and SSD, supported by data.
2) Small pilot projects for 1-1 computing with 2 classes (one Sec 1 NA and 1 E) with SSOE carts and for the rest of the classes with school-owned devices or BYOD with school-owned wireless.
3) Pre and post was done with the use of data (pupils/staff surveys, etc) was constantly shared with staff with the intention to touch hearts and minds.
Thank you for all your feedback and your help in my learning journey.- Aug 23, 2012
-
Hi, my flipped presentation. Do give me pointers.-
Mr. Ho - Hi Hui Yuen,
Thank you for sharing about the struggle you faced. MT is essential but pupils do not seem to enjoy. Not like our time. You milestone is useful for your teachers to check an review constantly so that there will not be backlog.
Just a suggestion. Have you considered going to adopt 10C Portal. I think you may have known it. So far what I have heard, it is quite a comprehensive portal. It sems to have integrated some Web 2.0 tools together with the portal. I heard they are usin VoiveThread together with 10C Portal. It alows teachers to collect pupils oral more...- Aug 22, 2012
- Show 2 more replies...
-
Mr. Ng - Thanks for the informative ppt.
I agree with Kok Soon about using 10C programme if your idea is for monitoring and charting pupils' reading. My school has the 10C programme and pupils can mouse over the character that they are unsure of during their individual reading and the hanyupinyin will appear. That's SDL and they do their voice recording on the spot. Peers and teacher will listen and assess their readings.
A few other questions:
1) How do you track students' reading progress? By number of books? But does it apply to reading with understanding...
2) more...- Aug 22, 2012
-
Ms. Anita - Yep. Maybe you want to explore the existing portal that MOE has initiated and customised it to your school. Getting a vendor incur additional cost or you can tap on your LMS portal that has one just like mconline.
- Aug 23, 2012
-
-
Ms. BH - Dear Hui Yuen, thank you for the quick tips. Like Chris, I find the monitoring most challenging to follow through and frequently in language programmes, this is a huge obstacle for implementation. Do you have a tool to differentiate the learners based on their reading abilities or materials that are in place? Maybe you can share those with us. :)

Dr. Tan - Thank you one and all for making the facilitation of this course such a pleasant one.
Once again, all the best as change agents. May you have fun, productive, and enriching trips overseas!
Just don't forget to submit your assignments (see post below) and to reflect one last time on one major takeaway (two posts down).
Mr. Wum - Thanks to you for leading us in this course. We have learnt a lot from you. It is one of the most mind blowing course for me so far!
Ms. Lee - Thank you and I feel that the hard work for this course has really stretched my learning. Really appreciate the prior ground/preparation work to help make all this possible. Happy Teachers' Day!
Ms. Tan - It's a good module with several issues that we can mull over. This module is also exemplary in changing how lessons are conducted via ICT. Thank U and Happy Teachers' Day!
