American Lit. Homework for the weekend, Friday 11-20-09

Due: Nov 23, 2009

1.) If you didn't finish, read the rest of the short story "The Life You Save May Be Your Own." It's available online at: http://faculty.smu.edu/nschwart/2312/lifeyous...

2.) Answer the follwoing questions on page 539:

#1 (what do you think? part): What is your opinion of Mr. Shiftlet?

#3 (both parts of the question): At what point did you suspect Mr. Shiflet of manipulating Mrs. Crater? Why do you think he's successful?

#4 (all three points): How do you interpret the story's title? Think about: 1. the road sign Mr. Shiftlet sees, 2. whose life needs to be saved 3. who is a potential savior

#5 Choose ONE question in the "Extend Interpretations" section:
6. Suppose the story ended right after Mr. Shiftlet leaves The Hot Spot and before he meets the hitchiker. How might your perceptions of him be different?
8. In what ways does Mr. Shiftlet resemble real-life con artists?
9. Think about the stories by Poe and Hawthorne you've read. Which
character most reminds you of Mr. Shiftlet?
