I began teaching English to Vietnamese Boat-people in Folkestone, UK in the late seventies. All my students were traumatised and came from a culture so very far from my own. I was teaching ESL and not EFL! I had only 3 months to help them integrate before they were whisked away to all different parts of the UK. The experience has become an indellible mark (in a positive sense) and I can't help recalling some scenes without a tear, even after so many years! I am now fascinated by language aquisition and learning, that I wouldn't change my job for anything else!
