About Autonomous Schools

Autonomous Schools recognize our high performing schools with empowerment. Schools that achieve Gold status in the school performance framework (80 to 105 points) become part of the Autonomous Schools.

The schools gain greater autonomy and control in areas of:
* Budget
* Instructional practices and supplemental programs and materials
* Staffing and scheduling
* Professional development and meeting requirements

Autonomous Schools receive special recognition through a partner-supported program to celebrate and showcase some of the schools’ success stories. Each school also receives a banner signifying the Gold status.

To replicate pockets of excellence throughout the district, Autonomous Schools will lead actions such as pairing with a school in the Priority status, mentoring other leaders or serving as forums for developing talent and cultivating new programs.

Schools must make adequate yearly progress (AYP) to qualify for Gold status and the Autonomous Schools. Due to testing and proficiency requirements, high schools are not part of the school performance framework at this time and will not be part of the Autonomous Schools.

Schools remain an Autonomous School as long as they achieve Gold status.

If a school falls below the 80-point threshold in the school performance framework, it will remain an Autonomous School for a minimum of two years, and up to three years if within 75-80 points, so that attention and resources can be provided to help restore the ranking. Otherwise, the school returns to its previous performance zone.

Autonomous Schools reflect the importance of our principals in leading change in our schools. Principals are strategically placed near the top of the District’s organization, empowering them with added resources in exchange for more accountability for enhanced results.
