About Mr. R. W. Carroll
This is my twentieth year teaching, and my thirteenth year as a faculty member of LHS after seven years at Gilbert H.S. I'm definitely not your traditional stereotypical educator. After a decade-plus as a successful businessman I changed careers in 1992 to education and I have no regrets for making the change. In a nutshell, I thoroughly enjoy what I am doing.
Following is what I call my "briefer than an obituary" resumé...
d.o.b - 1/21/53, Bryan, Ohio (small Midwestern community in NW corner of state).
Graduated from Bryan H. S., '71; Clemson University, '76, BS Forest Management, attended on an AFROTC scholarship.
Background includes... consultant forester; BMW race-team mechanic; railroad switchman & conductor; warehouse manager; salesman; business entrepreneur, manager, and owner (transportation); electrician; contract estimator; purchasing agent; project manager; pizza delivery; carpenter; and professional educator! (Did I leave anything out?)
Personal... I'm married, 36 years, to Debbie who teaches at Lake Murray Elementary, we have two grown children (both graduates of LHS & Clemson): Ryan, residing in Madison, Wisconsin, and Christy, married and residing in Huntsville, Alabama, where her husband, Will Spink, is a pastor; and three granddaughters, Caitlyn, 5 years, Allison, 2-1/2 years, and newborn (September 18), Lily!! I enjoy travel and nature photography, hiking & camping, playing guitar & mandolin, and reading in my spare time; and, we are members of Lexington Presbyterian Church where I am an elder, SS teacher, and volunteer with both our youth ministry and our worship team.
Professional... I am certified by the SCDOE (#168190) in Science and Gifted & Talented. I am a Teacher Leader with the NOAO RBSE program and my memberships include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Planetary Society, and The American Association of Physics Teachers.
To me, education is not just "book learning"; therefore, I have a holistic approach in the classroom. In addition to the course content I teach and model thinking skills and a commitment to being a good steward of our personal talents and strengths. I encourage and expect excellence in the classroom, both academically and personally. I also firmly believe in building relationships with each of my students. Incidentally, the voice you hear at half-time of football games announcing the Cat Band? That’s me.
