About Mr. Joe Slifka
I am a STEM teacher for LaBrae Local Schools. My wife is also a teacher, though she is on leave. We've been married for three years and have two daughters, Isabella and Sophia.
I received my Bachelor's Degree from Youngstown State University in Middle Childhood Education (4-9) specializing in math and science and my Master's in Teaching and Learning from Nova Southeastern University specializing in K-12 Technology Integration. I graduated from Boardman High School in 2001 and have lived here in the Mahoning Valley all my life.
I was honored in the summer of 2011, being named a 2011 Siemens STEM Institute Fellow. I spent a week at Discovery Communications World Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD (just outside our nation's capitol). While there, I collaborated and networked with forty-nine other fellows as well as some of the nation's top scientists and STEM contributors. Locally, I was named a Turning Technologies Distinguished Educator in February of 2010 and was honored by our local news station WKBN in December of 2010 with a Creative Classroom grant. I recently received a grant through the Dominion Education Partnership to purchase $6,500 worth of STEM materials to incorporate an environmental technology course I designed.
I live and teach by four simple philosophies:
1) Always do what is right.
2) Treat others the way you expect to be treated.
3) In order to get respect, you must first give it.
4) Always help someone out when you can.
